God of War (2018) Ending Explained

A lot of people have been interested in the recent PS4 exclusive from Santa Monica Studios, God of War. The 2018 rebooted sequel has received a lot of heavy criticism from hardcore gamers and a lot of praise from anti-gaming journalists. Nevertheless, for gamers who can’t be bothered to spend 10 to 16 hours playing through the game, this article here will explain the ending.

At the start of the game Kratos is seen cutting down a sycamore tree that was specifically marked by his deceased wife, Faye. The tree is used to build a pyre for Faye. Kratos and Atreus then set off on a journey to scatter her ashes on the highest summit in the land, per her request.

Kratos and Atreus are at odds given that the two hadn’t spent much time together before their journey. Atreus was a momma’s boy, and Kratos resents his wife’s son’s weakness.

Nevertheless, after a brief and destructive battle with Baldur, the duo make the journey through Midgard, eventually meeting two estranged dwarves, Brok and Sindri, who help Kratos by upgrading his gear throughout the journey. They also encounter a witch in the forest named Freya that helps them navigate Tyr’s bridge, including instructing them how to replenish the Bifrost by traveling to different realms in order to clear a path up the mountain of the giants.

The duo travel to Alfheim with the help of Freya, but she’s unable to leave Midgard due to a curse by Odin, who had banished her there and stripped her of the ability to fight or kill. They manage to fight through the Dark Elves and reignite the light at the heart of the realm to refill the Bifrost in order to remove the Black Breath from the base of the mountain.

Kratos and Atreus scale the dwarven mines made for the giants and eventually reach the top where Kratos defeats Hraezylr, a dragon.

God of War (2018) - To Slay A Dragon

Near the top of the summit, the duo encounter Mimir, trapped in a tree. Mimir reveals to them that the summit that they’ve reached isn’t the highest summit in the land, but rather the highest summit is located in Jotunheim.

After cutting off Mimir’s head to free him from the tree, they take his head to Freya, who restores life to the head.

Mimir talks to the World Serpent, the latter of whom agrees to help Kratos and Atreus on their journey.

God of War (2018) - The World Serpent

The duo have to go on a lengthy side-quest in order to get into Jotunheim, and along the way they encounter Baldur and his relatives, Magni and Modi.

Magni and Modi battle with Atreus and Kratos, and Kratos manages to split open the head of Magni because he didn’t eat enough protein and didn’t protect the virginity of his testosterone.

On their way to Jotunheim, Modi attacks Kratos and Atreus from behind, subduing Kratos with his lightning mace. In an attempt to help his father, Atreus flies into a fit of rage and falls into a coma.

In order to help save his wife’s son, Kratos takes Atreus to Freya, who informs Kratos that he must travel to Helheim. However, the Leviathan Axe cannot be used in Helheim, forcing Kratos to dig up his past… literally.

God of War (2018) - Atreus Ill

With a heavy heart and a weighed mind, Kratos sullenly travels back to his home and unearths the Blades of Chaos.

With the past’s bane in hand, Kratos ventures into Helheim and carves out the heart of the gatekeeper… for his son.

God of War (2018) - The Hell Guard's Heart

Kratos manages to restore Atreus back to health, and informs him that his illness was due to him fighting his true nature as a demi-god.

Atreus’ mother was mortal but since Kratos was the Ghost of Sparta, he attained godhood.

The two continue their journey, with Atreus deciphering many of the Norse legends and runes. It’s discovered that Atreus has the gift of tongues, helping Kratos solve many of the puzzles.

However, after discovering that he is a god, Atreus begins to develop an ego and question the (poor) teachings of Kratos.

The two begin to butt heads after Atreus begins to disobey Kratos’ orders, claiming that as gods they can do whatever they want.

God of War (2018) - I am a god

As Kratos and Atreus argue back up the mountain over his insubordinate behavior, they eventually manage to open the gate to Jotunheim, but Baldur gets into a fight with Kratos and Atreus.

Atreus is wounded and captured by Baldur while the gate to Jotunheim is destroyed. The fight spans the skies, with violence riding on the back of a dragon and all the way to the gates of Tyr’s bridge.

During the brawl, Baldur attempts to send them to Asgard, but Kratos forces the gate to Helheim.

The duo escape from Helheim, but on their way out there’s a fleeting memory of Kratos’ past that Atreus witness, which sees Kratos battling Zeus to the death. Atreus pretends as if he didn’t see the memory fragment in order to avoid angering Kratos, who repeatedly had forgone telling Atreus about his past and reprimanded him every time the boy asked about his past.

God of War (2018) - This is Your Fault

With the help of Mimir, the duo manage to find a hidden bridge to connect them to Jotunheim and with the help of Brok and Sindri, they manage to get some high-end armor for Atreus.

With the help of the World Serpent, they travel inside the beast’s body to retrieve the statue that has the eye that Mimir needs to help them to travel to Jotunheim, but Baldur injures the World Serpent and forces it to vomit out the duo.

It’s revealed that Baldur is actually Freya’s son, and he was cursed not to feel. Baldur means to kill Freya but Freya attempts to reason with him. Being that Kratos isn’t into all that feminism crap, he beats the crap out of Baldur. During the ensuing fight, Baldur punches Atreus in the chest, but the green mistletoe fragment breaks his curse and Baldur and Kratos fight to the death while Freya tries to stop them.

God of War (2018) - Baldur Feels Pain

After Kratos kills Baldur, Freya vows to kill them and parade their bodies to the far corners of every realm, since Baldur meant everything to her and was the last treasure of her decrepit and imprisoned life.

Freya carries off Baldur’s body while Atreus and Kratos make one final boat trip to Tyr’s bridge.

At the bridge leading to the summit in Jotunheim, Kratos lets Atreus carry his mother’s ashes for the first time, and he takes off the bandages that hid the scars of Sparta that were burned into his flesh from wearing the chains from the blades of chaos.

God of War (2018) - A Mother's Secret

While traveling through the cave leading up to the summit, they discover another ideogram featuring their journey up to that point. It’s through the painting that it’s discovered that Atreus’ mother was actually a giant, and that he’s half god, half giant. The ideogram also reveals that at some point in the future Kratos was dying in the arms of Atreus while a serpent entered Atreus’ body.

Together, as father and son, Kratos and Atreus sprinkle Faye’s ashes over the summit of Jotunheim where the ashes of her ancestors lay scattered about in the distance.

During this time, we learn that Atreus’ real name is Loki.

God of War (2018) – Ashes

After traveling back to their house, Atreus and Kratos sleep, and Atreus dreams a deep dream that years later they receive a visit from the god of thunder himself, Thor. Only Mjolnir is seen due to Thor wearing a heavy, dark cloak.

The game ends on an ominous note, with Mimir warning the two that something has changed and that Ragnarok is happening sooner than what was in the prophesy.

God of War (2018) - Through The Gates of Hel

TL;DR: Krato’s wife, Faye, was actually one of the last of the giants. Odin had been attempting to hunt them all down and kill them from all the realms. Faye’s final request was to have her ashes spread over the highest summit in the realm, which was the top of the mountain located in Jotunheim, which is the land of giants.

It’s revealed that Odin sent Baldur, Modi and Magni to kill Kratos and find out more about Faye’s whereabouts so that they can find a way to Jotunheim. The only way to get to Jotunheim had been purposefully destroyed so that Odin and Thor could not go there and wipe out the rest of the giants. Through perseverance and determination, Kratos and Atreus work together to Baldur, Modi and Magni, and discover a secret access to Jotunheim where they finally spread Faye’s ashes. They also discover that all of the giants have already perished.

However, their deeds end up disturbing the balance of the realms and disrupting the prophecy of Ragnarok, speeding up the end of times. Their actions also further garners the attention of both Odin and Thor. The game ends with Atreus having a vivid vision of Thor visiting their home and wielding Mjolnir, preparing to do battle with Kratos.
