Serious Sam 4 Announced, Will Feature Level Editor, Split-Screen Co-op

Croteam and Devolver Digital announced that the next entry in the Serious Sam franchise will be Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, and the game was recently teased with a near minute long trailer ahead of its full reveal, which is set to take place at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles, California.

The news about Serious Sam 4 was originally made public in the wee hours of the morning via a tweet from publisher Devolver Digital on April 19th, 2018.

They were smart to get the news up a day before the official release of God of War, because otherwise they would be battling for eyes on the product, and that would be a huge disservice to hype machine that Devolver is attempting to build around the upcoming first-person shooter.

You can check out the teaser trailer for Serious Sam 4 below.

The teaser trailer is running in-engine on Croteam’s latest version of the Serious Engine. Much like previous iterations, the engine’s focus is on massive, large-scale battles where the screen is filled with enemies and players must battle through hordes of foes in order to complete the level.

The Steam page reveals quite a bit about the game, including that following on the heels of Serious Sam: BFE, the Steam Workshop support will be making a return, along with both local and online cooperative play. And yes, this means the inclusion of split-screen gaming.

The Steam page also reveals that the game will come bundled with a level editor, so you can make your very own co-op maps or single-player campaigns, just like Serious Sam: BFE. Additionally they mention that the game will take place across more environments than just the desert this time around. As evident with the teaser trailer, it appears Sam gets to venture to the forests this time around.

Additionally, you will need a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit compatible operating system if you want to play the title. So it sounds like this is going to be the largest iteration of Serious Sam yet.

The full gameplay reveal will take place at this year’s E3. I do wonder if Devolver Digital will have a press conference like last time or if they’re going to go a more traditional route like many of the other publishers?
