Stonewall Penitentiary, Murder-Mystery Launches May 14th

Storycentric Worlds and Unimatrix Productions announced that Stonewall Penitentiary is set to release on May 14th. The game is designed as a murder-mystery graphic novel, paying homage to many of Agatha Christie classics, specifically And Then There Were None. The actual gameplay is closer to the likes of classic mystery-oriented, first-person point-and-click games.

The game is themed around six individuals who have been kidnapped by a mysterious individual and locked away inside of an abandoned penitentiary. The objective is to scour the prison and find clues while uncovering the mystery as the six begin to drop dead.

The game utilizes a graphic novel style presentation, reminiscent of the old Nancy Drew games from Her Interactive, or the classic Sierra titles like Phantasmagoria.

You can check out the gameplay trailer for Stonewall Penitentiary below.

The gameplay centers around collecting items, reading notes, and solving various puzzles.

The premise and setup seems very similar to movies like SAW or the off-beat murder-mystery Danganronpa games. Obviously, this title is made on a much lower budget, and it’s missing the mini-games of Spike Chunsoft’s series.

Stonewall Penitentiary clocks in at over 10 hours, and sports two different endings depending on the choices you make throughout the game.

Surprisingly, this graphic novel, murder-mystery actually supports fully voiced characters, which is shocking for a low-budget title.

Visually it looks like the characters were designed in Poser and then exported into backgrounds made in Unity or Unreal, but given an outlined shader filter in order to imitate a graphic novel design.

Murder mysteries aren’t frequent enough to be trite like other pixel-point and click games, so there’s a possibility that a small niche audience might be attracted to a game like Stonewall Penitentiary.

You can keep an eye on the project or look to pick up a digital copy starting May 14th by visiting the Steam store page.
