Sylvester Stallone’s newest action movie endeavor is a sequel to the 2013 mediocre action-thriller, The Escape Plan. The sequel, Escape Plan 2: Hades, abandons the buddy-up duo of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, replacing Schwarzenegger with Guardians of the Galaxy star, MMA fighter, and former WWE Champion, Dave Bautista.
The latest trailer for The Escape Plan 2 dropped recently, featuring the core setup for the action-packed, ‘R’-rated flick. The plot is a heck of a lot more convoluted this time around, but at the same time it seems to offer far more action beats and a much faster pace than what was presented in the first film.
The plot centers around one of Stallone’s operatives, a Chinese fellow with a penchant for fisticuffs, getting captured and taken to a super high-tech prison called Hades. It’s being run by the trope-friendly corrupt warden, who utilizes the latest in tech to keep high-profile criminals in check. Stallone secures the services of Bautista in order to infiltrate Hades and help free his Chinese buddy. You can check out the trailer below courtesy of Zero Media.
Bautista is basically the muscle while Stallone is the brains.
Aiding in the exploits is Jesse Metcalfe, 50 Cent, and Jamie King. I imagine they tossed in a few chicks just to avoid being labeled as “sexist” by the typical Left wing media.
The prison design itself looks way cheaper and far less intimidating than The Tomb from the first movie, but it also looks like we get more high-octane martial arts this time around, along with some pretty intense shootouts handled by Bautista.
Typically most fans are expressing disappointment with the lack of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and I can’t blame them. The sequel seemed to be perfectly poised to have Arnold reprise his role and help give Stallone a hand by doing what he does best, walking around with big guns and blowing up everyone who gets in his way.
The make-it or break-it element for Escape Plan 2: Hades will be how well they pace the movie and how competent the action sequences are filmed. Right now it’s impossible to tell from the trailer, but I have to be honest and say that from the little I’ve seen they don’t inspire much confidence.
Anyway, you can look for Escape Plan 2: Hades to land on DVD and Blu-ray, along with being available as a digital on-demand, title starting June 29th, 2018.
