Tate Multimedia released a new trailer for the upcoming 2.5D, combat-racing platformer called Steel Rats. The dieselpunk action title is set to come out later this year for home consoles and PC.
The trailer for Steel Rats covers how how an alien invasion of a species called junkbots have begun taking over the town of Coastal City. These bots have invaded a small junker town, and the only thing that seems to stand in the way of the junkbots is a group of bikers known as the Steel Rats.
Each member of the Steel Rats have their own unique bike and special ability. The leader of the group uses an armored bike that can smash and crash through the junk bots. The one kid, Randall looks like he has a pretty sweet ability, where he can use molten chain to attach to the robots and use it as a grappling hook to propel him into the robots and do damage.
You can check out the video below, which profiles each of the riders.
I’m surprised that they added the kid Toshi… usually Japanese males are rarely added to games, especially games made by Western developers. However, Toshi is a wiz-kid genius, and his ability in the game is to utilize gadgets to help him out in combat, such as electrocuting the junk bots.
Steel Rats combines a mixture of stunt-based racing like Trials, but it adds beat-’em-up style combat to the mix where players will have to ride through the levels fast and furiously while combating the junkbots.
The game also adds boss battles to the mix, where players will have to stay aware of their surroundings while also fending themselves off from junk bots and whittling down the life of the giant robots.
I don’t know how well the game will do given that it’s not exactly a game that fits into a specific genre. Selling it to today’s market will require quite a bit of exposure, but given that today’s media are so focused on identitarianism and sociopolitics, it might be difficult for the game to reach a broad audience.
