Yet another first quarter, 2019 release has been announced; joining Shenmue 3 and Metro: Exodus is Ysbryd Games and Sukeban Games’ VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action.
The off kilter bartending simulator, which mixes in elements of point-and-click games with actual drink mixing and some visual novel elements, already managed to capture a niche audience on PC. The developers are now aiming to capture some modicum of success on the Nintendo Switch and PS4.
The game centers around a snarky, emo, lesbian bartender named Jill… because obviously these days you can’t have a game without an SJW-approved sassy-mouthed lesbian in it somewhere. You’ll be able to concoct up to 24 different drinks, and learn about the lives of the people who come in to get wasted in the futuristic, cyberpunk dystopia of Glitch City.
You can check out the trailer below to get an idea of what the gameplay is like.
The game covers a wide range of topics about cyberpunk life from the ground floor. Instead of being some hero trying to topple a mega-corporation or a bounty hunter attempting to bring down bio-engineered specimens, you’re able to discuss the ins and outs of transhumanism with a hybrid cat-girl, or talk about the corporatocracy of rule handed down by the mysterious Zaibatsu Corp with a grizzled journalist.
There’s also some deep-dives into the morality of robotic prostitution with a character named Dorothy Haze, who happens to be an android hooker, and there are some interludes where you can learn more about Jill, her ex lesbian lover, and some of her interests during the downtime.
Now just because Jill is a lesbian and this has elements of a visual novel attached to it, don’t expect any kind of titillation designed for straight, white males. It’s not that kind of game (unfortunately).
Nevertheless, there’s a cyberpunk soundtrack attached to the game that you can cycle through on the in-game jukebox while you put together drinks and listen to the stories from the denizens of Glitch City, and you can alter the way some conversations unfold as you soak in the neon-hued setting of the VA-11 HALL-A dive.
You can look for VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action to launch for the Nintendo Switch and PS4 starting next year in 2019 for $14.99. The game is currently available on Steam and for the PlayStation Vita as a digital download.
