Team Sonic Racing Gameplay Videos Showcase Some Mundane Racing

Sega’s upcoming team-based racing game, Team Sonic Racing, has received some new footage ahead of this year’s E3. The few minutes of gameplay footage features the game’s multiple routes through the tracks, as well as some of the power-ups.

Despite being called Team Sonic Racing, we don’t actually see much teamwork being applied in the videos. The first video was uploaded by ShackNews, featuring Tails, Shadow, and Knuckles racing around a track, gathering up power-ups and attacking other players.

The game is a lot closer to the likes of the original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing as opposed to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Instead of having different transforming vehicles, the game sees each character having their own kart. Apparently you can team up with other players and race as teammates. The major difference, however, is that Team Sonic Racing seems to be a lot slower than the original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

Again, we don’t really see any kind of teamwork being applied, just each racer attacking the other racers on the track after getting a hold of some power-ups.

A second video from Finger Guns also features additional gameplay, but it’s not much different from the Shacknews video above.

While the videos have a lot of support from the YouTube community, there are also a lot of comments asking about the transforming abilities, asking why the game is a lot slower than Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and what exactly the hook is for the game that separates it from Mario Kart 8: Deluxe? It’s a good question, and hopefully this teaser footage isn’t entirely representative of what the full game will be like when it releases on home consoles and PC.

We can expect to see more details and more gameplay footage at E3 next week. Team Sonic Racing is due out for the Xbox One, PS4, PC, and the Nintendo Switch in late 2018.
