While AAA game companies are attacking their fans, churning out SJW propaganda, and trying to court non-existent demographics for their long-running franchises by removing fan-favorite features, Japanese indie developer Studio Nanafushi is doing just the opposite: They’re making games for gamers.
The outfit announced that their hardcore, hack-and-slash, action-RPG side-scroller, Dead or School, is currently available right now in Early Access over on the Steam store for $14.99. During the first week of its launch you can actually pick up a copy for 10% off the normal price.
The game features Hisako, a girl who grew up underground and always wanted to visit school. She learned about it from her grandmother and envisioned it to be a great place to learn and play. However, school is anything but fun and joyful in Hisako’s world. Tokyo has been overtaken by demon zombies who look like they crawled right out of a Hideki Takayam anime.
Hisako makes her way above ground only to discover the zombie hordes, and decides to kill the zombies and save the school girls from certain defilement by using a number of weapons and abilities to destroy the zombies. You can check out some of the gameplay in the action-packed trailer below.
To be an indie game that failed its IndieGoGo campaign, the launch trailer is surprisingly well done.
There’s a mixture of hand-drawn animated sequences and CG images for the cutscenes. The gameplay itself is played like a typical side-scrolling shooter game. Players will utilize Hisako’s melee attacks and projectile-based weaponry to kill, maim, dismember and decimate the zombie hordes.
Players will also help various students along the way and unlock new skills and abilities as they level up Hisako. Studio Nanafushi describes this as “hack and slash x girl action”. I’m not going to disagree with that.
The game also features character damage for Hisako for you ryona fans out there. The lower her life, the more her clothes get ripped off and you get to see how the plot unfolds through the combat.
There’s a lot of plot in the game, by the way.
Mm, mm, mmm… the thick plot in the game will definitely keep you up all night long.
One of the coolest parts about Dead or School is the robust crafting system in the game, where players can gather up supplies through their travels, and strip down components from old gear in order to upgrade their weapons, add new abilities, and essentially customize your own uber-powerful gear that you can use to take down the demon zombies. This includes adding status effects to your swords and guns, changing the firing rate and fire types, as well as increasing the damage output.
There’s almost a limitless amount of creativity and customization featured in the game by mixing and matching parts, almost like Mercenary Kings.
Scale wise… the game is pretty huge. You get to visit Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara, and Roppongi. There’s a Metroidvania aspect to the game, but it reminds me of a 2D version of Resident Evil meets Chainsaw Lollipop and Bullet Witch.
If this is the kind of game that tickles more than just your heightened interests, you can learn more or pick up a digital copy of Dead or School over on the Steam store for $14.99.
