Discord Bans NSFW Content For Partnered Servers
Final Fantasy XIV Discord
(Last Updated On: July 25, 2018)

Discord recently updated its terms of service, barring servers from hosting NSFW content through channels. The exact date of when this update occurred is unknown, but some suspect it took place between July 24th, 2018 and July 25th, 2018.

Over on the Discord support page a new rule was added for the partnership requirements, specifically regarding NSFW content…

“Do keep in mind that being a Discord partner means exhibiting the best behavior, as well as always upholding our community guidelines. Because of this, Partnered servers should never contain pornographic content, but you are welcome to use the NSFW age gate for something such as a channel discussing spoilers.”

But according to a post over on the Discord sub-reddit, it’s not just NSFW content that are causing them to cull partners from their list… language is also a determiner. On July 25th, 2018, the owner of the FFXIV Discord server noted that they lost partner status not only for hosting NSFW content (which they actually deleted) but for language as well.

The server host of FFXIV, Eanae, explained…

“How is it after quickly cooperating that the actions of 1 person (which we have received no information about other than it allegedly occurred in a channel) is able to ruin things for an entire community (of more than 35,000) when the Discord server owners responded quickly and effectively? Why is there no policy to work with server owners – especially partners who want to make sure we’re not breaking Discord guidelines. Why is there no appeal process? The entire situation is a bit tilting.”

Eanae goes on to explain that the NSFW content was there before their server was granted partnership privileges, something that happens once a community achieves more than 8,000 subscribers, or 10,000 followers, depending on the platform.

The owner of the FFXIV server actually received a response from a staff member of Discord who explained that it wasn’t just the NSFW content on the server channel, it was also the fact that the server contained discussions where people used the word “retard”. The Discord staff wrote…

“Searching up the word “retard” brings up a staggering 4,869 results at the time of sending in this ticket, and there are also a large amount of strong racial slurs which we won’t be mentioning here.

“By being a Partnered server, we hold your community to a higher standard and trust that your server is one that anyone can enjoy without worry. Unfortunately, you and your server’s behaviors and actions have not fostered a welcoming home. If anything, it’s become a server that has gotten bad enough for users to write into our team directly about.

“This is a final decision and the perks will not be restored.”

There’s also an image of the e-mail from the staff that was shared in the Reddit thread.

This did not sit well with the Discord community, and they in fact began asking more questions about Discord’s policies and why there’s such a lack of communication regarding the policy changes and their enforcement.

One user in particular pointed out that Discord’s staff seemed to be playing favorites with removing partnership status from servers. In particular, user SirMangler wrote…

“Discord has dug themselves a hole by making this decision. If this keeps happening, then the word will keep spreading about this system being unfair and it will eventually undermine Discord as a platform.

“What happens to all the partnered servers that didn’t know this? Does Discord clear out all of their partnered servers? Because I’m sure most of them don’t have this rule.

“The official discord servers aren’t even guilt free.

“The official Discord Testers has 85 uses of retard, 14 uses of that unspoken racial slur, 13 uses of cunt, and a partridge in a pear tree.”

The most damning example in SirMangler’s post was a reference to the Overwatch server, which he linked an image to showing how often the users in the Overwatch Discord used the word “retard”. It totaled 6,678 times, which is 1,809 times more than the amount of times it was used in the FFXIV server.

And yes, the Overwatch community is a partnered server with Discord.

This sort of favoritism spawned a lot of resentment in the Discord community, with some calling these new rules and enforcement measures a means of autocracy.

Another Discord staff member jumped in to save face for the company, writing…

“NSFW content (such as pornography) is not allowed in partnered servers. When we introduced NSFW channels a while back this was made clear to all our existing partners (since our partner policy previous to this feature was not clear).

“That said we’ve definitely failed to properly document and communicate this rule, both for new partners and existing partners who have forgotten/missed our previous clarifications. I’ve asked that our partner team clear up the wording on this matter (namely, you can have a nsfw-marked channel for things like spoilers/etc, but they cannot contain explicit or other adult content) and that we document this rule in a few places to make sure folks don’t miss it and can find the information when they search. Apologies for any confusion!”

The lack of communication on the rules, the banning of certain servers from the partner program, and the inconsistency in handing out bans for some servers while letting others get away with language that they claim is prohibited from being used on partnered servers left a lot of Discord server operators befuddled and disconcerted.

We saw similar rules being applied by companies like Twitch, and Blizzard, and just recently Ubisoft. This sort of widespread politically correct censorship is a common trait among those floating around in the hierarchy of the Intersectional Inquisition.
