Talks around the web and rumors from various sources are expecting Apple to release its upcoming 2nd generation AirPods either at Apple’s September Event, or sometime in 2019. The only hint given by Apple is that there will be a new upcoming AirPod, because this year Apple announced the company will soon release a 2nd generation AirPod wireless charging case.
Since that announcement Apple has been silent regarding information on providing updates on the AirPod charging case and any information on the next generation AirPods, instead rumors and talk has provided whatever information has surfaced.
Let’s start with the former KGI security analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he’s known for making 95% accurate prediction regarding upcoming Apple products, from release date information, to what changes to expect in different Apple devices.
In an article by Macrumor, Kuo states that Apple will release an upgraded version of the AirPods in the second half of 2018. He predicted that the AirPods shipments will increase by 100%, and the cause of the increase would contribute to an upgraded AirPod in the second half of 2018.
Another report by Bloomberg states that “sources that are familiar with the matter” claim that the AirPod 2 will be coming out later this year. Another report by 9to5 Mac states that analyst Barclays believe the next generation AirPods will be released in 2019. Some speculate Apple might release two different AirPods, one in September 2018, and another updated AirPod version with design changes in mid-2019. The reason for the different dates may have to do with the information that is currently circulating.
Let’s talk about rumors and what changes we might expect to see occur on the upcoming AirPods. Kuo and the Barclays analysts both believe the 2nd generation model will bring new improvements and a new design, some believe we should look for noise cancellation to make the feature list. Talk has it Apple could use what is called the physical analogue methods instead of using the electronics active noise cancellation method. Other rumors point to expect a waterproof (no submerging) or more water resistance then what the current water status is. Another new feature that has been talked about is activating Siri, or rather “Hey Siri” — enabling users to just tap to activate a conversation with Siri instead of yelling it out at the phone.
As more rumors and talks surface, look for more updates to come regarding the upcoming 2nd generation AirPods.
