The Samsung Display Division has just announced the newly developed all-plastic flexible OLED panel, which has been certified by the Underwriters Laboratories, an official testing company for the Occupational safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The rigorous test that the laboratories undergo are no child’s play, in order for Samsung to earn the certification, the panel had to withstand 26 drops from 4 feet (1.2 meters) with no damage and it also had to hold up under extreme temperature testing, in addition Samsung stated the display was also subjected to drops that were from six feet and with no signs of damage.

Samsung has stated that this unbreakable flexible panels are not only being developed for smartphones but also can be used in other products such as: display consoles for automobiles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs. The panel is said to be similar to glass, having the characteristics of being lightweight, transmission properties,  and hardness.

Not to take the spotlight off of Samsung, but a recent report by deccanchronicle stated that Huawei might launch a foldable smartphone as early as 2019. The article goes on to state that Huawei has collaborated with BOE Group for manufacturing flexible OLED panels for its foldable smartphone.

Now this will up the stacks in more than one way, first, Huawei is competing to become No. 2 in sales of smartphones, which will put Apple in the 3rd spot. This also means pressure on Apple to get in the game to hold its place, which seems unlikely at this time.

Smartphones are constantly evolving, each company must become more innovative then the other in order to stay on top or fall behind. Stay tuned for updates regarding the upcoming Galaxy Note 9, and if it will display the new unbreakable flexible panel when it launches on or around August 9th
