VR Porn, VR Steam Games Each Top $50 Million In Revenue Since 2016, States Report

A market report from SexLikeReal has estimated that both VR gaming and VR porn accrued $50 million in sales throughout 2016. The original numbers were actually higher for VR gaming on Steam (sitting around $75 million) but due to some discrepancies in figures involving free bundle packs, free downloads, free keys, and promotional giveaways, they adjusted the figure to $50 million.

Nevertheless, according to the report they noted that there are over 3.5 million VR game player profiles, and that the SexLikeReal team narrowed down the list to 481 VR titles on Steam that have consistently been selling to those millions of players, bringing in a total of $50 million in revenue since 2016.

Alex Novak, CEO of SexLikeReal, commented in the press release about the figures, noting…

“It’s interesting to compare that figure with our previous research about the VR porn market in 2017, which saw sales of $18M in gross revenue. Looking at sales over the same period as the data from Steam we estimate a total of $50M with around 6,000 VR videos being released to date, with $15M in revenue in 2018. So far, VR games and VR porn appear to be the biggest consumer markets,”

There’s a fairly significant caveat, though: most major platform holders block VR porn apps.

As noted in the report, while SexLikeReal’s VR app has been downloaded by more than 600,000 users, gaining access to it is a real hassle. You need to go through various steps to get it installed for the headsets, and devices like the Oculus Rift and Oculus Go are designed to complicate things so you can’t access porn on the headsets, this is despite the fact that the Oculus Rift is the most popular VR headset used to view pornography, according to SLR’s stats.

Much like the hardcore video game sector, VR porn is mostly a male enthusiast endeavor. According to the SexLikeReal infographic that they released earlier this year, only 10.8% of their users are female, and majority of those consuming VR porn through the SLR app are males from the West.

It’s interesting figures covering a market that the major platform holders are trying their hardest to block out. For instance, you can’t even access the SLR app from an iPhone or for the PSVR, completely blocking out any sort of revenue that the company could glean from those markets.

In a way, it’s quite telling that VR porn is still making headway despite being shunned by the platform holders. Naughty America has recorded over 20 million downloads of VR porn videos since launching a VR section, and some of the most popular VR software to date are VR porn games like VR Kanojo.

One would think that with the downturn in hardware sales on major distributors like Amazon, the software distributors would want to lure in as many customers as possible, even if only for the porn, but it looks like some of the hardware vendors would rather see their sales tank than open up the market to a more easily excited and willing audience.
