Resident Evil 2 Remake Footage Features First Look At Claire Redfield

During this year’s GamesCom event Capcom rolled out five minutes worth of footage for the Resident Evil 2 remake featuring Claire Redfield’s gameplay. Obviously Capcom had her spandex shorts and cutoff jeans replaced with full curve-hugging jeans and a full red leather jacket. Also the model they picked for Claire doesn’t look entirely purebred.

Anyway, the footage was accompanied by some brand new screenshots, a look at some of the different weapons in the game, and a blog post explaining more of Claire and her gameplay stylings over on the Capcom Unity site.

Resident Evil 2 - Claire Redfield

Just like in the original game, Claire rides into Raccoon City while a zombie outbreak occurs, on the lookout for her missing brother, Chris Redfield.

Claire runs into Leon S. Kennedy at the Raccoon City Police Department, and the two attempt to scour the police station for supplies, survivors, and a way out.

Claire encounters the blonde-haired and blue-eyed Sherry Birken, the daughter of Dr. William Birkin, a scientist who has become a giant mutated monster.

This is part of what’s featured in the gameplay demonstration for Resident Evil 2 at this year’s GamesCom in Cologne, Germany. The footage posted up over on the YouTube channel Punish. You can check it out below.

The clip starts with Claire moving an obstruction out of the way and meeting up with Sherry.

The lighting effects look really good, and the directional light rays with volumetric filtering creates the sort of ambient occlusion that gives the game a dynamic cinematic feel during the cutscenes. However, in the actual game the lighting isn’t quite as dynamic, and the player-character practically glows.

The clip features a short boss fight with Dr. Birkin, and it’s very similar to Resident Evil 5 in terms of handling and combat. You don’t have all the fancy acrobatics from Resident Evil 6 at your disposal.

The clip ends after a short cinematic with Claire and Sherry being waylaid after ending up in a locked down garage within the police station.

The clip ends shortly after that.

One of the major criticisms that some viewers had was that Claire’s voice actress doesn’t seem to depict much panic or fright after seeing a giant mutant man with a pulsating eyeball the size of a small sedan poking out from his right shoulder. It’s true that she seems relatively calm and talks about the encounter in a rather passe way, which is completely immersion-breaking. Either they shouldn’t have had her to speak at all or at least have her to say the lines with more fear in her voice.

Anyway, the remake of Resident Evil 2 is set to release on January 25th, 2019 next year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
