Eidos Montreal and Square Enix’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider is currently available for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game is a third-person shooter with some platforming, and a whole lot of killing. Feminists will love this game, since it’s all about hating and killing men. For gamers interested in getting a little help with some of the levels, there’s a gameplay walkthrough available.
YouTuber Krystal109 has a series of videos available for the game, covering the main story in a gameplay walkthrough series for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The game clocks in at around nine hours in length. You can check out the video series below.
The game starts with a ridiculous cinematic, and then jumps back a few days earlier to another ridiculous scenario where Lara is pinned under some rocks.
They tease the possibility of her cutting off her leg to get out from under the collapsed cave, but you just use the Square button (or ‘X’ on the Xbox One controller) to lift the rock and climb up out of the cave-in.
Once out of the cave, you simply walk along the path and use the climbing picks to scale the rock faces.
When you reach the top press ‘X’ on the DualShock (or ‘A’ on the Xbox controller) to get to the top of the ledge.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider Controls
That ends the opening segment, and yet another cinematic will play thereafter.
When the cinematic wraps up, you’ll have to mosey around to find Dr. Pedro Dominguez.
You can grab a few supplies from around the fiesta; walk toward the gate to trigger another cinematic and Lara will hop the fence.
Make youre way through the memorial and out into the next area of the festival.
Keep walking through the back alleys and following Dominguez and Commander Rourke.
This is like typical AAA-style walking simulator mode, as you won’t be doing anything but walking.
Keep following the duo until you get to another fenced off area, and then another short cinematic will play and Lara will end up in the jungle.
She’ll finally equip her bow and arrow.
Press in the right analog stick to trigger survival vision so you can see your mission objectives.
You can do stealth takedowns of enemies by pressing Triangle on the DualShock (or ‘Y’ on the Xbox controller) when behind them.
You can aim with the bow using the left trigger and and fire by pressing the right trigger.
Free the archeologist and then hop up the platform by pressing the jump button twice.
You can also press the left trigger or right trigger to rappel down steep cliff faces.
You can use the rope dart to pull apart wooden obstructions, and use Square (or X on the Xbox controller) to rapidly pull down the obstruction.
Make your way through the cave and clmb up the platforms and jump across to the other side of the cave where there’s a hole in the wall and there are some items you can acquire.
You’ll need to proceed underwater by jumping down and holding down Circle on the DualShock (or ‘B’ on the Xbox controller) to descent underwater. Press ‘X’ on the DualShock (or ‘A’ on the Xbox controller) to ascend.
Head down through the cave and through the crevice and then proceed through the magically caving in rock structure to get out on the other side.
Proceed toward the underground pyramid and climb up the dangling bells.
Rappel across to the other side of the platform and continue to use the rope-dart to proceed across the gaps.
You can use Circle on the DualShock or ‘B’ on the Xbox controller to dodge under the spikes.
Make your way toward the bell platforms until one of them get stuck and then you’ll have to perform a platforming puzzle. Pull the wench to rotate the turntable and then push the cart with the rope on it down onto the turntable. Pull the wench again to have the cart face Lara and then use the rope-dart to hook it up to the cart and pull the cart up and then cut the rope and use the cart to smash into the bell platform.
From there you can proceed to the next area by climbing on the bell crate and then leaping to the next platform.
Yet another cinematic will play once Lara gets to the altar. Once it finishes up you’ll need to make your way out of the tunnel and kill a low-class minority who was paid minimum wage to fix a water pump.
Lara activates her Y chromosome and has to kill all the men in the area by murdering them violently with her climbing picks.
After unleashing her inner-sociopath, climb up the wall and use the shrubs to take down the enemies.
Take out all of the mercenaries and then proceed through the gate.
And yet ANOTHER cinematic plays… this time Lara gets waylaid by Dominguez’s men and meets the man himself, who reveals that by Lara taking the key she has set the apocalypse in motion.
A magical tsunami wipes out the brown people and Lara has to swim through the wreckage to get to higher ground.
Use the left or right trigger to swim faster and make your way through the flooded storefront and then back up into the tsunami. A typical Hollywood-style blockbuster set piece gets underway and Lara watches a bunch of people die while traversing through the tsunami, including a little boy.
Once Lara finishes climbing up the building and whining about it being her fault that the tsunami happened, Jonah finally puts her in her place by telling her to stop whining like an annoying feminist.
And then there’s yet ANOTHER cinematic.
After the pilot dies and the plane crashes, Lara ends up in a swampy jungle.
Also, her hair in the plane scene looks awful. There’s a lot of jaggies and the the piss poor LOD on the hair cards create a hideous low-poly casting-net effect.
Once you get into the swamp area, you have to follow the linear path straight ahead and move through the jungle to follow the flare.
Reach the camp to save the game – there are also some items you can pick up nearby, including a handkerchief in a box sitting out in the middle of nowhere.
Once you reach the campfire you’ll be able to make use of the skill system. This includes three different categories of skills themed around combat, exploration, and stealth.
Follow the pathway to the plane wreckage and interact with the propeller. The plane cabin will fall into the water – dive in, kill the fish with the knife and move on.
You’ll need to sharpen your makeshift knife, so go back to the campfire and click on the inventory and then select weapon crafting to create the makeshift knife.
Use the knife on the cables holding up the crates to cut down the gear boxes.
Grab the bow and arrow kit along with the walkie talkie.
There’s a tomb nearby where you can explore through the cave to grab some crafting gear and additional relics.
The tomb is linear and you simply have to move through the designated pathway to reach the end.
On the other side of the tomb you’ll find yourself closer to Miguel’s location.
Head to the camp and follow the blood trail until you encounter Miguel’s entrails and dismembered body.
Jaguar Boss Fight
Another cinematic will play and then you’ll have to travel through the Jaguar territory and engage in a jaguar boss fight.
Track and shoot the jaguar repeatedly. When it gets enraged it will charge you, at which point simply use Circle (or ‘B’) to dodge the jaguar’s attacks. If Lara’s standard dodge doesn’t quite get her out of the way, use the dodge button twice by tapping it quickly to dodge and then perform a roll-dodge.
Keep rinsing and repeating the tactic of shooting the jaguar and dodging the charge attacks until you finally kill it.
After you finally kill the jaguar a really dumb scene will play that mirrors the scene from Alien 3 where the guardian xenomorph approached Ellen Ripley and got real close to her face.
The jaguar will open up a new area and you’ll be able to climb over the ledge and get to the part of the Peruvian jungle.
Proceed up through the jungle to the next crash site… and – you guessed it – YET ANOTHER CINEMATIC!
There’s another campfire nearby that will allow you to upgrade your equipment and craft new gear, assuming you have enough materials.
Moving slightly around the river’s edge you’ll find another crypt you can embark through.
Follow the pathway across the platforms and past the pillars into the next area.
Head up to the top of the crypt and open the tomb to uncover a cape inside.
Once you get done raiding the tomb, take the makeshift lift back down to the bottom and exit the tomb.
For the bucket puzzle, work with Jonah to push the wheel and then quickly run down below and use the bow to fire the rope across to the other side and attach it to the pulley system.
When you reach the next campfire there’s a challenge tomb just up ahead.
Follow the path up to the old 20th century camp.
You’ll also find a campfire there where you can save your game and upgrade your gear.
Proceed further into the jungle camp, you’ll find another journal and some more areas to climb up, along with another puzzle.
You’ll need to rotate around the device with the perpendicular rope post and then fire the rope-dart at the other end. Move the second pulley system to bring the box around and then hop back down to the first device to rotate it around and connect the rope to the box.
Jump back onto the box and go to the second pulley system and rotate it and then quickly jump onto the box. The box will carry you to the other side.
Proceed out of the crypt and back to the camp.
The second jaguar will attack Lara as she attempts to crawl through a crevice and more ryona ensues.
The jaguar rips and bites up her back.
Use the preset flare-gun to shoot the jaguar in the face and then proceed to use the bow and arrow to kill the jaguar.
After you kill the jaguar you’ll have to endure an even longer cinematic.
Lara Croft As A Child
After the cinematic ends the game will flashback to when Lara was a child.
Lara doesn’t really look anything like Lara.
Anyway, you’ll need to run around and find clues about the white queen.
You’ll need to take the weighted balls and throw them up onto the play scape and then find all the clues around the area until you go to the top of the play area and throw the weights onto the crow’s nest.
The nest will lower and you can access the photo inside the treasure chest.
Proceed to climb up the side of the house and make your way around the side of the mansion to make your way back to Lara’s room.
Head up to the top of the roof and make your way around the top of the house only to fall back down to the bottom.
It seems like Eidos Montreal desperately wanted to mirror the young Drake parts from Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4, but kind of failed.
You’ll also need to modify the globe to read 30 degrees longitude and 90 degrees latitude, as depicted in the image below.
Go upstairs and crank the valve to open the wings of the paper plane.
Head back downstairs and you’ll need to solve the statues puzzle.
Move the two statues with the shields raised above their heads under the lights aiming down on the floor.
Once the two knights are in place, go back over to the golden globe and crank the lever on the right side of the globe to open the cage. Pull the queen out from in front of the door.
Yet another cinematic will play once you go into the room, and it will recap some of the time that the Croft family spent together, as well as Lara’s mother, Amelia Croft.
The cinematic ends after Lara goes into the room and finds that her father shot himself in the face.
After Lara wakes up from her dream of reliving her childhood, her and Jonah get back on the trail of heading toward Silver-Crown Mountain.
You can modify Lara’s outfits here or upgrade your gear if you have additional skill points to spare.
There are some crafting supplies you can pick up in the surrounding area, but once you get done go over to Jonah to head into the next part.
Head through the jungle area to past the campfire and there’s a ledge you can climb up that leads to a challenge tomb.
Inside you’ll need to attempt to platform your way across the ledges but Lara will fall into the water. Swim out of the cave and go up the ledge and jump on the large makeshift weight to lift the pulley and open up the next area.
Make your way into the next area of the ruins, and climb up the ledges until you enter into a puzzle room.
You’ll need to push the cart on the far left side of the track all the way inward (or toward the east area of the puzzle room). Northwest there’s a statue – shoot and connect the rope to the statue to the tract, and do the same for the statue on the northeast side of the puzzle room.
Pull the cart on the northwest side all the way south, and then climb up the platform on the west side of the map and jump onto the pulley system to bring the mechanism down into the cart. Repeat this process for the cart on the southeast side of the map.
This will raise the ladder and allow Lara to climb up top and reach the relic.
You’ll unlock faster health regeneration.
When you get done inside the challenge tomb there’s actually a hidden chest in a small cave on the cliff-face if you scale down the mountain facing the river. There are some ledges you can use to climb below to reach the chest, but yo9u’ll need a lockpick kit to access the contents inside.
Once you get done rummaging around, follow the navpoint past where Jonah is standing and you’ll encounter a a new map inside of a shack and a few scant supplies.
Head down the muddy slide and Lara will continue her transition into Larry Croft, where she embraces her inner John Rambo and slathers on the mud and manages to manhandle a few of the enemy NPCs.
Larry and Jonah manage to kill all of the Trinity guards around the APC and commander their weapons, including using one hand to disarm a mercenary and use her super strength to launch him off the cliff with one arm.
You’ll need to craft a flaming arrow and use it to burn through the wooden blockade in front of the cave entrance.
Once you get out of the cave Lara and Jonah will make their way into a village just below the muddy hill.
MKIceAndFire has a walkthrough of the game, which you can check out below.
An Inca chick will talk to Lara and Jonah, and Lara will get the flirtatious hints that the chick gives toward Jonah and will leave them together.
You’re probably just as shocked as I am that the chick wasn’t a lesbian.
Anyway, you can pick up some side-missions from the shanty town, including dealing with the local thug named Omar.
You have to run all around the town to deal with the pillagers, including talking to Marco, and then heading to the edge of town to talk to Pablo after you come out of the cave.
Follow the path into the dig site and kill all of the men there by embracing Lara’s inner Larry Croft.
Once you kill all the guards around the area, Lara will free the villagers.
Make your way back to the village and talk to Marco.
You’ll earn a River Hawk pistol for your troubles.
Once you complete that mission you can then head to the ruins.
There’s a temple you can enter to progress the main story mission further, along with a campfire nearby so you can upgrade your equipment.
Make your way through the temple. Activate the levers to cause the spiked pendulum’s to swing. Proceed across the platforms until you reach a platform across from the spiked trap. Use the rope arrow to pull the spiked trap towards you to destroy the obstruction and then go back and close the wind passage so you can get to the other side.
Proceed to climb up and attach the stuck obstruction to the spiked trap and then go back over to the first lever and activate the wind passage to force the spiked pendulum to swing and pull the obstruction out of the way.
Head to the next lever and open the wind passage to put out the fire and then proceed to the end of the temple.
After saving your game at the campfire another cinematic will play leading into the next segment.
Swim under the bridge and take out the Trinity members.
Continue through the jungle and into the next area to reach the temple puzzle that’s surrounded by lava.
You’ll need to open up the two doors and memorize the symbols and then input the correct symbols to open the door.
To open the first center door you’ll need to to have the left side with the line and three dots at the top, and the two pancakes at the bottom. As pictured below.
On the right side you’ll need to setup the spinning tablets so that the top one has the line with the four dots facing outward, with a single dot in the middle, and at the bottom the tablet should have three dots, as depicted in the image below.
Proceed to open the next door in the center of the corridor.
Another door will open up and you’ll need to solve the puzzle featuring four turntable tablets on each side. The one on the left should have a line with three dots on the top tablet, and the other three tablets should be pancakes.
The right side should have the first tablet set to the ideogram with the four dots over a line, the second tablet should be a single dot, the third tablet should be three dots, and the fourth tablet should be a single line. As pictured below.
Go inside and open the door and then you’ll have to do it one more time.
The tablets all stay the same, with the left side having a pancake on every tablet except the top, and the right side’s very bottom tablet being set to the one with two dots and a line. From there you’ll be able to proceed into the next room.
From there you’ll need to make your way into the next segment and then proceed through the underwater caverns after accessing the ancient relic.
