The Last Remnant Heads To PS4 December 6th While Square Suspends Steam Sales
The Last Remnant

Way back in the day, in a last generation far away and long forgotten, Square Enix announced that the JRPG The Last Remnant was supposed to launch on the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Unreal Engine 3-powered game launched for the Xbox 360 in Japan and in the West, but the PS3 version was nowhere to be found. Given that the PS3 lost a lot of exclusivity during the seventh generation due to hardware complications and a lack of proper middleware support, it’s no surprise that a niche game like The Last Remnant was relegated to Xbox 360 and PC for the last decade. Well, after ten years of sitting on the sidelines of the PlayStation field, Square Enix announced that The Last Remnant is finally coming to a PlayStation home console for the very first time.

Square Enix rolled out a teaser trailer for the remastered version of The Last Remnant, which is now running on the Unreal Engine 4 instead of the Unreal Engine 3. The game has had its visuals enhanced for the eighth-gen console and will release later this year on December 6th.

You can check out the ever-so-brief teaser trailer below.

This was one of the rare ‘M’ rated JRPGs to come out, and featured a grand-scale adventure across a fully realized fantasy world. It actually seemed more like Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy XIII.

Anyway, the game has been suspended from sale on Steam for the time being.

According to a community post over on the Steam store, a Square Enix rep noted that the game would no longer be available for sale until further notice…

“As already stated in previous notifications, we will be postponing the sale of The Last Remnant as of the 5th of September 2018 2:00 am JST (Wednesday).
We apologize to any customers that were planning to purchase this game.

“Anyone who has already purchased the game will be able to continue playing it accordingly.

*Anyone who has already purchased the game will also be able to re-download it.”

It’s definitely good news that anyone who already owns the game can continue to play it or re-download it if it’s in their library but not installed. The rep notes that there has been no confirmation on when the sales will be restarted.

The Last Remnant - Smile

However, most gamers presume that the suspension of the game’s sales on Steam is due to the fact that Square Enix has plans on re-releasing the game in its remastered form and would prefer to have only one version on Steam. This has happened multiple times in the past, where an older version of a game is taken off of Steam and replaced with the remastered version.

If that is the case, then it would make sense to suspend the sales for now until the remastered version is complete.

Sometimes they also give previous owners an upgrade for free, as a complimentary service and a “thank you”. Sometimes.

The Last Remnant - Armor

On the upside at least this is a remaster of a game not many people played, so there’s a lot of fresh ground to cover with re-releasing The Last Remnant. Added to this, the game comes from an era where pretty girls and sexy outfits were still allowed, so it’s something to look forward to whether you plan on waiting to get the remastered version on PC or get the PS4 version this December.
