The original publisher of Agony had a binding contract to prevent Madmind Studios from releasing the Adults Only version of the game on any platform. The binding contract prevented the developers from talking about why they couldn’t release the unrated version and how they were unable to release a patch for the game while under Playway’s publishing deal. Now that the NDA has expired, Tomasz Dutkiewicz explained in a press release how the team quietly worked on the unrated version of the game and have released it under his own name away from Playway.
You can download Agony Unrated right now for $14.99 from over on the Steam store. The game is also free for everyone who already owns a copy of the original Agony.
Agony is also set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch at the end of 2018 thanks to a publishing deal they signed with Ultimate Games. It won’t be the unrated version due to the consoles prohibiting the release of Adults Only games on the system, but it will hopefully be optimized enough to run on the Switch both in portable mode and in TV mode. The PC version is the only version that will receive the full unrated edition.
Additionally in the press release, Dutkiewicz explained why they were unable to initially release the unrated version on PC, saying…
“Unfortunately, but the contracts we have in force, both publishing and rating, blocked us from releasing the patch and removing the censorship from the game. Any lawsuit related to the violation of these rules would most likely lead to the closure of our studio.
”To release Agony Unrated, we had to choose an alternative route and remain in the shadows by announcing the suspension of our work on the game. Today, after a few months since the release of Agony, the deadline for contracts binding us has passed and we can share these details with you.
“At the moment, the PC is the only platform that gives us the freedom to create the world we’ve come up with. This, unfortunately, means Agony Unrated can never appear as a Digital Edition on consoles.”
According to Dutkiewicz, if they can strike up a deal with another publisher, they might be able to release a few limited edition boxed copies of Agony Unrated for the Xbox One and PS4. However, with Sony’s new censorship policy in place, I wonder if Sony will even allow the unrated version of the game to release on their platform?
Either way, Agony Unrated is now available for download, and it features improved gameplay, new optimizations, eight different endings, a new environment type in the Agony Mode, more enemies and puzzles in both the Normal and Hard Mode, the new story mode featuring the Sukkub, all the uncensored scenes that were originally supposed to be in the game and new uncensored scenes that Madmind added to the game, new lighting system, improved characters and textures, new traps to deal with and new environmental threats.
Some of the uncensored content is not for the faint of heart, as it includes additional infanticide scenes, guro sex scenes, guro orgies, and additional executions and altar sacrifices. You can grab a copy of Agony Unrated right now or download the unrated version for free if you already owned a copy of the first game.
