Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently available for purchase for the Xbox One and PS4. A PC version has been rumored but for now you’re stuck with getting the game on the current gen twins. The game is supposedly 60 hours long and some YouTubers are already trudging through the game as quickly as possible to help give you the goods on what to do and where to go for all the main story missions. If you need help with the game, there is a walkthrough guide available for Red Dead Redemption 2.
YouTuber MKIceandFire has up a playlist of videos covering the entirety of Red Dead Redemption 2, which you can check out below.
Once you setup the brightness you can either log into the social club or start the game’s story mode. After the game finishes loading it explains that at the turn of the century in 1899, outlaws and gangs were at an end and things were a-changing.
Chapter I: Colter
After the intro there’s a cinematic Dutch and Arthur go out looking for the other gang members. As is usual with most Rockstar games, you’ll use the left analog to steer the horse. Press ‘X’ on the DualShock to speed up the horse while riding or you can press ‘A’ on the Xbox controller.
Once they meet up with Micah, keep following behind Dutch and Micah.
Once you reach the cabin and park the horses at the hitch, hide in the stall by moving over to the ledge and press the left bumper to hide up against the wall.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Controls
You can use the left bumper to access your weapon wheel, or you can use the left analog to peep out from behind cover. You can also aim and shoot using the left trigger to aim and the right trigger to shoot. To duck, press in the left analog stick.
You can activate the Dead Eye effect by holding down the left trigger and tagging enemies by pressing down the right analog button.
While Dutch is talking to the guys, it becomes obvious that the men at the cabin are degenerate bandits.
Kill the bandits – one will attempt to run off past Arthuer. Go chase after him before he escapes by pressing ‘X’ to sprint on the DualShock or ‘A’ on the Xbox One controller.
Once the men are cleared out, you can enter into the cabin and examine the items when the Square button becomes highlighted on the DualShock, or ‘X’ on the Xbox controller.
You can take highlighted items or press right on the digital pad to access your inventory.
You’ll find some food and cartridges within the cabin. Take them.
Head into the barn and fight the O’Driscoll boy and beat some sense into him using the Circle button on the DualShock, or ‘B’ on the Xbox controller.
You can either spare the man or kill him or choke him to death.
Focus on the horse using the left trigger and calm the horse and then pull it along. You can also hitch the horse to the post by pressing Triangle on the DualShock, or ‘Y’ on the Xbox controller.
Another cinematic will play, and then Arthur and a dandy fop named Javier will be asked to track down John.
Follow Javier through the snow to track down John.
You can also change camera angles by pressing in the touchpad on the DualShock. You can also switch to the cinematic camera view via the DualShock or the Xbox One by pressing in the right analog stick.
When you reach the top of the mountain, you’ll need to swap out your sidearm. At the start of the game you can only carry one sidearm at a time. Press the left bumper when you’re interacting with the horse’s satchel to swap weapons in your inventory.
You’ll find a busted up John Marston all mangled on the freezing cliffside of a treacherous and unforgiving mountain. Pick up the wounded cowboy and head back to the horses – some wolves will attempt to waylay the trio. Kill the three dogs using the shotgun you equipped, and send those dogs to Valhalla.
Heading back to the cabin, kill the other dogs before they bite off the legs of the horse.
You’ll end back up in the cabin after the cinematic. You can walk around and talk to the other NPCs or you can examine the items in the cabin.
Exit the cabin and go into the other shack where another cinematic will play. You’ll then go out on a mission with Dutch to track down Colm O’Driscoll for a showdown.
Follow Dutch up to the rally point, get off your horse and then you get to see another short cinematic.
You’ll unlock a second weapon slot, this time you’ll be able to have a rifle.
Follow Dutch across the side of the mountain and down to the camp. You can either lead the charge or have Dutch lead the charge. Kill all the bad guys in the camp and then use the Triangle button on the DualShock or ‘Y’ on the Xbox controller to search the bodies.
Once you get done looting the dead bodies, on the way back to camp you’ll need to chase down and lasso an O’Driscoll before he gets too far. You’ll have the lasso added to your inventory so you can capture Kieran Duffy.
Bring Kieran back to camp to complete the mission.
The next day go talk to the fat cook to start the next mission.
A black man will take Arthur on a hunting mission in the mountains.
Just like in Assassin’s Creed or the original Red Dead Redemption, you can hunt different wildlife. You can use an animal call to lure out some animals, and then hold down the right trigger to prime the bow shot.
Keep in mind that poor shots and multiple shots will diminish the quality of the pelt and lower the amount of money you can make from sales.
Completing the mission will unlock the master hunter challenge.
The next mission will center around robbing a train.
Ride with the gang to the train tracks. Go talk to the stoutly bearded man and then grab the spool of wire and attach it to the detonator pump.
Once the wiring is all setup, open your inventory and cover your face by moving over to the inventory section and equipping the face mask.
Race toward the train with the rest of the gang and get on board. Move up the cars and kill the guards along the way. Head to the front of the train, beat up the conductor and then stop the train.
After blowing open the doors go inside and there’s a chest behind the desk on the right side of the train car. Inside the chest is a selection of bonds. Take them.
You can either kill the guards or threaten them.
Once you get done dealing with the guards, go to the front of the train and start it back up to complete the mission.
There’s another long segment involving the caravan moving into a forest clearing.
After another long cinematic you’ll finally get to the real game when Chapter II begins.
