THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games decided to move forward with the Darksiders franchise following the dissolution of Vigil Games and the departure of renown artist Joe Madureira who would go on to work on Airship Syndicate’s iteration of his work, Battle Chasers. Nevertheless, Darksiders 3 is coming out during a turbulent sociopolitical time that has ravaged gaming to its very core, and has created a vicious rift between gamers and the (corrupt) media, with many games caught in the crosshair, along with developers who decided to side with the media and their regressive politics. For those of you who decided to bite the bullet and purchase a copy of the game, there is a gameplay walkthrough available.
The game starts with a recap of how the Charred Council came to be, how the Four Horsemen came to be, and how the very impatient Fury was given her task during the apocalypse.
The story of Fury takes place before the events of the first Darksiders. The Charred Council gives Fury the task of dispatching the Seven Deadly Sins.
She has the typical Liberal feminist attitude – mouthy, obnoxious and with a foul temper. If it were just dialogue with no graphics you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between her dialogue and a fourth-wave feminist ranting on Twitter.
How To Play Darksiders 3
The controls for the game are the same as the last two games.
Square on the PS4 DualShock (or ‘X’ on the Xbox Controller) is to attack.
Triangle on the DualShock (or ‘Y’ on the Xbox Controller) attacks with your secondary weapon.
Press ‘X’ on the DualShock or ‘A’ on the Xbox Controller to jump. Tap the button twice to double jump.
R1 (or right bumper) dodges attacks.
Right trigger locks on to a target
You can perform ground smashes by pressing R1 + Jump.
Press in the left analog to spring.
L1 + R1 performs a special Wrath attack after your meter fills up.
L1 + R2 initiates Havoc Form, where Fury can transform into an uber-beast and wreak havoc on any nearby enemies or bosses.
You can perform a counter-attack after successfully dodging with the right bumper by pressing your attack button. This does additional damage.
Envy Boss Battle
Your first major encounter will be against Envy after battling through a few enemies throughout the level and swinging across the platforms to reach the building. A short cinematic will play and then the fight will begin.
Dodge Envy’s attacks with the right bumper and pepper it with your chain whip to whittle down its life. After a short intermission you will need to climb up some platforms and continue to pepper Envy with combos.
Rinse and repeat this method until you defeat Envy, at which point Fury will acquire the Talisman of Sin, which will guide you to your next boss fight.
If your life gets low press up on the digital pad to use the selected item from your inventory (typically a health potion). Use left and right on the digital pad to cycle through your usable inventory items.
Follow the nav point up through the level and make your way up through the ruins until you meet Volgrim, where you can trade the souls you collect from defeated enemies to upgrade your wares or unlock new ability points.
When you want unlock new ability points, feed your souls to Vulgrim to gain new points and then go into the character menu through the options screen and upgrade your attributes, which includes upgrading your Health, Strength and Arcane traits.
Continue to make your way up the platforms and use the whip to jump across and latch onto the overhang to reach the higher platforms of the tree.
Continue to follow the pathway up and swing across to the next section of the tree until you reach the checkpoint where Vulgrim is stationed.
You’ll encounter Ulthane Blackhammer near the top of the tree.
Obviously there’s a black man who speaks up to Fury and instead of killing him Fury humors his angst.
Ulthane will give Fury the Bridge Stone so that instead of killing humans and reaping their souls, she can use it to teleport them back to Haven where Ulthane attempts to protect them.
Once Fury receives the Bridge Stone, make your way up across the tree house and then proceed to the elevator and travel down the elevator to the base of the tree.
The pathway outside has a few areas, but they don’t lead anywhere except for the hole in the ground that leads into the sewers. You can collect a few souls from enemies up on the platforms or in the alleys, but you’ll need to drop down into the hole by the boss to reach The Nether.
The pathway here is quite linear, just follow the sewer tunnels to the eggs and the giant bugs, killing anything in your path… especially the eggs.
Swing across the sewer gap using the whip and continue to take out the scaly creatures along the way.
You’ll reach a room that leads to a dead end. There’s a bug on the ground. Pick it up by pressing Circle on the DualShock or ‘B’ on the Xbox controller. Press in the right analog to target the floor and throw the explosive bug to blow a hole open so you can travel down into the subway system.
There’s a web that you can blow open to reach an area where you can fight a sub-boss, simply pick up one of the bugs with the explosive butt and throw it at the wall. Follow the pathway through the tunnels until you you reach Wrath.
Wrath Boss Battle
You’ll find the next boss fight in the pit, Wrath, fighting off and dismembering angels.
He’s a rather easy boss to fight. Simply dodge his forward attack and then unleash a combo on him.
Rinse and repeat this tactic to whittle down his life until finally defeat him. He’s not very difficult and his attacks are easy to dodge. Basically run toward him and attack and then run back to dodge his attacks.
After the cinematic you’ll need to fight in a short arena battle sequence while in the Hollow. Fury will then acquire a Fire Hollow.
With the Fire Hollow equipped you can perform equip attacks using Triangle on the DualShock or ‘Y’ on the Xbox controller. You can also wade through fire and lava without taking damage. Double tapping the jump button also allows Fury to ascend up platforms.
Wade through the lava and reach Vulgrim. You’ll be able to trade in the souls for upgrades and learn a little bit more about who betrayed the Horsemen.
Follow the pathway to the platforms overlooking the fiery lava.
Use the chain to swing across to the other side.
Use the double fire jump to reach the platform where the mini-boss is located. Defeat him and then jump up top to reach the crystal and strike it to open the door.
In the next room past the enemies, there’s a lava pit with a lava waterfall, behind the waterfall is a demon artifact that you can use to upgrade your equipment.
Use the double jump to hop back up onto the platform and make your way up the stairs.
Proceed through the corridors and defeat all the skeletons and then at the back of the room there are a bunch of pots. Break the pots and on the left side there’s a small hole – duck down and crawl through the hole to reach the other side where there’s a lever. Flip the lever and then travel back through the hole and strike the crystal to open the blockage where it will lead you to a bridge. Strike the crystal in the room to raise the bridge and get to the other side.
Head up through the chamber corridors until you reach a broken platform where some wind is blowing. Inside the room near the broken staircase is another hole in the wall, crawl through it to reach the great hall. Kill the enemies inside and then in one of the concave dais you’ll find a hole in the floor that you can drop down into.
Follow the pathway until you reach Vulgrim, and then take the blue sword from one statue by striking it to have the statue release its grip on the sword, and then pick it up and place it in the hands on the statue in the next room. Strike the sword once you place it in the hands of the statue and then go to the other side of the room and strike the sword in the hands of the other statue. This will open up the door door to the next room.
Make your way down past the large statue, defeat the mini-boss and then proceed up the stairs on the other side.
Proceed all the way around and then jump down into the room filled with bones and step on the pressure plate in the center of the room.
Kill of the enemies in the room and then step on the plate to wait for the stone cylinder to rotate around and take you to the room with the sword chained down. Take the sword and then make your way up the stairs to the three statues and place the sword in the hands of one of the statues.
Make your way around to the cylindrical passageway on the far left side of the chamber where the three statues are located.
Proceed through the passages and defeat the enemies along the way until you drop down into a clearing with another pressure plate on the ground.
Clear out the room and then lead the fire bug over to the food on the ground. Wait for its butt to turn red.
You’ll need to time it by then going up on the platform, swinging across the ledge and then using your double-jump fire attack to set the orange webbing on fire hanging in the air, and then doing a ground smash on the webbing on the ground. This will trigger a chain reaction of fire that will spread across the room, blow up the bug, jump to the next set of fire webbing and climb up the wall.
As the fire is climbing up the wall, be sure to step on the pressure plate so that the platform rotates around and the blue crystal is exposed to the fire as it spreads up the wall, it will turn the crystal red and open the pathway that leads to the third and final sword. Take the sword and head back into the main hall. Place the sword in the hands of the statue and strike all three swords in the hands of each statue to open the pathway leading up to the next area.
Make your way up through the platform to the next area and then a short cinematic will play where an ugly child that’s not a child will attack Fury.
Kill all the ugly little leprechaun kids and then head through the service tunnel past Vulgrim until you reach more platforms. Hop across until you reach the museum exhibit where more ugly little kids are located. Kill the kids and then proceed then proceed up the stairs into the next area.
