Rockstar Games launched Red Dead Redemption 2 last week on October 26th for the Xbox One and the PS4. The open-world Western game wasn’t just highly anticipated by casual gamers, because according to one report even the hardcore weebs took time out of browsing and playing games on Nutaku to go check out the third-person shooter from Rockstar.
Over on the Nutaku blog there’s a brief insights page detailing the user activity just before and after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2.
According to the blog, traffic took a major dip during the midnight launch of the game, but eventually the traffic came back the next day. The blog states…
“Traffic to Nutaku gradually decreased to an entire 20% in the wee hours of the morning, as gamers tuned in to play Red Dead Redemption 2, immediately following its midnight launch. What a coincidence. We think not! Interestingly enough, a drastic upwards shift, starting at 10AM, eventually lead to a spike of 15% increase in traffic.”
There’s a graph showing the actual decline and spike.
Now just as a caveat: correlation does not expressly mean causation.
We don’t specifically know for a fact that Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch meant that Nutaku was directly affected by it, but we do know for a fact that Nutaku’s traffic did go down during the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2.
More specifically, Nutaku saw a massive traffic drop from Texas, of all places, more than anywhere else during that period, which definitely leads credence to the idea that a bunch of Texans went out to buy Red Dead Redemption 2 to get a small taste for the glory days of the Wild West.
We saw similar traffic patterns across other pornographic websites during the launch of Fallout 4, which also caused a huge downturn in traffic on sites like Pornhub. Funnily enough, just the opposite happened with the launch of Overwatch, where the hot waifu-bait in that game caused porn sites to spike in traffic during its launch.
What’s also interesting is that following the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, Nutaku saw a huge spike in user activity for action-adventure games by a margin of 143%. Adventure games also went up in activity by 134%. Obviously some people played the game and felt they needed some porn-style action-adventure games to keep the Western theme going.
