Blizzard Entertainment announced that Heroes of the Storm‘s development will be scaling back in coming months, as the teams are being shifted off of the project to focus on other games. According to a news post made over on the official Blizzard website, it’s been revealed that development on the MOBA game will be winding down, so don’t expect major new content coming out for the game.

President of Blizzard Entertainment, J. Allen Brack, along with chief development officer, Ray Gresko, mentioned…

“[…] we’ve made the difficult decision to shift some developers from Heroes of the Storm to other teams, and we’re excited to see the passion, knowledge, and experience that they’ll bring to those projects. […]

 

“[…] after looking at all of our priorities and options in light of the change with the game, the Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm will not return in 2019. This was another very difficult decision for us to make. The love that the community has for these programs is deeply felt by everyone who works on them, but we ultimately feel this is the right decision versus moving forward in a way that would not meet the standards that players and fans have come to expect.”

It appears as if Blizzard is cutting its losses with Heroes of the Storm. Typically if development is winding down on a game and e-sports events are getting cancelled, then it means the game is no longer profitable.

Within the next six months don’t be surprised if Blizzard closes up shop on Heroes of the Storm altogether.

Now Blizzard is saying that they will continue to support Heroes of the Storm for “long term sustainability”, but I suspect this is code for “no new major updates and we’ll keep the servers on and cash shop open to make the bare minimum amount of revenue from the game”. We’ll see how this all turns out for the game’s future, but it doesn’t look good.
