U.K. Age Verification System For Porn Sites Set To Go Live In April
UK Censorship

Multiple reports are going around that the U.K., will finally have its age verification system put into place as part of the approval from the British Board of Film Censors for the Digital Economy Act to curb access to pornographic websites for anyone under the age of 18 via the Regulatory Policy Committee.

Sankaku Complex picked up the news from Metro.co.uk, who detailed how starting this spring, April to be exact, the new regulation for pornographic and adult websites to require digital proof of identification will go into effect.

This application of the law, which was passed back in 2017, was supposed to be implemented last year in April, but no one had anyway on how to facilitate the infrastructure to make that possible. Instead, it ended up getting delayed to late 2018.

However, instead of the measure being applied, Parliament proceeded to mandate the application for 2019.

According to Lord Hansard’s motion, which was published on December 11th, 2018, he stated…

“If the Internet Watch Foundation, without a true legal basis, can get sites blocked immediately, why cannot we, with proper law? Everyone has had warning about it. The whole of the industry around the world has apparently been talking about it for the past year. The BBFC has spoken at such events. Everyone knows, so I cannot understand why we cannot act more quickly and go live from day one. If anyone does not comply, that is bad luck. We could set up some pre-notification stating: “If you do not comply by tomorrow, you have had it”.”

This is not hyperbole.

Adult websites that do not comply with the porn ID law will be blocked from being accessed, or fined. Additionally, it states that regardless of whether there are adult verification methods in place, sites containing “extreme” content can also be banned from being accessed by U.K., residents.

‘The regulator will also be able to direct ISPs to block access to sites containing ‘extreme pornography’, regardless of whether AV controls are in place.’

Users will have to provide proof of age via identification in order to access said websites.

According to Metro, there will supposedly be some form of verification provided to the 60,000 or shops in Britain…

“The ban on under-18s was approved as part of the Digital Economy Act last year, but the British Board of Film Censors had to come up with a system to verify

“There’s likely to be several companies offering age verification systems, with 60,000 shops in Britain will offer Age Verification cards (based on shopkeeper’s assessment), which should be on offer before April.”

It doesn’t sound like things are going to go over so well for porn distributors or British users once this law goes into full effect.
