A Plague Tale: Innocence Borrowed Inspiration From Baroque Art, 14th Century French Architecture

Focus Home Interactive and Asobo Studio released a new developer diary for A Plague Tale, covering the game’s development and further info about what players can expect from the upcoming title.

The developer diary web series covers the game’s setting, and why the developers chose to set it during the French middle-ages.

Sebastien Renard, the narrative director, wanted to take a period that’s rarely explored in games and from an area in history that we don’t usually get to play through, which is why they settled on 14th century France.

You can check out the three and a half minute video below.

Players take on the role of kids who once lived in nobility, but things quickly break down as war breaks out and a rat plague spreads throughout the countryside.

In addition to the army of rats, and soldiers prowling about, there’s also the ominous loom of the inquisition, who are exacting their own brand of justice on the people.

This kind of moral grime transcends the actual actions depicted against the people in the game, and also finds a way to slither into the architectural designs within A Plague Tale: Innocence. This includes lots of city streets composed of buildings, structures, and abodes based on many 14th century trends, along with the theme of lacking hygiene during that time.

Dirt and filth will fill the streets and the walls and cobblestones that line the pathways through some of the old and unkempt buildings that stretch across the less-than-bustling towns within the game.

According to the art director they also wanted to maintain a sense of realism but with a touch of artistic flavor inspired by the hyper-realistic paintings of Baroque artists like Johannes Vermeer.

The team wanted to capture something of a romantic feel for the color tone and backgrounds, while juxtaposing it with the very obvious grim setting of the game’s plot, which involves orphans attempting to trek across a war-torn France while avoiding the flesh-eating rats.

You can look for A Plague Tale: Innocence to arrive on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC starting May 4th later this year.
