Devil Engine Set To Launch On Steam, Switch February 21st, But Hits Slight Delay On PS4

Protoculture Games and Dangen Entertainment’s Devil Engine is scheduled to release on Steam starting February 21st, 2019 at the end of the month. The game was also scheduled to release on the PS4, but it hit a slight snag according to the developer.

In a tweet made on February 1st, 2019, Protoculture Games made it known that their side-scrolling, action-arcade game, Devil Engine would be delayed slightly on the PS4 due to some issues with Sony.

Now quite naturally a lot of people assumed this meant that the game was likely being affected by Sony’s censorship policies, and that perhaps the platform holder was expanding their regulation outside of fan-service games toward any ‘ole games.

However, when asked if the delay had anything to do with performance or content, Protoculture Games was quick to respond, saying that it was neither.

So this could range from anything related to pricing to release dates to marketing.

On the upside, at least it wasn’t a censorship issue, right?

For gamers not in the know, Devil Engine is a classical side-scrolling throwback to the old-school error of hand-animated arcade shooters. If you enjoy bullet-hell then the game offers it up in spades. You can check out the gameplay trailer below to get an idea of what it’s like in action.

The story is pretty straightforward. You take command of the last remaining vessel to defend Earth, and head toward the skies to put an end to the one thing that was supposed to save humanity… the Devil Engine.

The game is designed to mirror the art and stylings of the 32-bit era, especially from the Neo Geo catalog.

There will be eight playable game modes, and a soundtrack composed by SHMUP master Hyakutarou Tsukumo.

You can grab a playable demo of the game right now from over on the Steam store page, or look for it to arrive first on PC and the Nintendo Switch starting February 21st, 2019.
