Anti-#GamerGate Developer John Kane Apologizes For Sexual Misconduct
John Kane GamerGate

Anti-gaming activist, anti-#GamerGate critic, feminist ally, and Australian game developer, John Kane, has had no qualms about publicly condemning gamers and #GamerGate on social media. Like many critics who have come out publicly against the consumer revolt to improve ethics in media journalism, it turns out that Kane was cast under the bus by the Social Justice Warrior community after someone he was involved with outed him as a sex pest, prompting him to apologize for his sexual misconduct.

On March 20th, 2019, journalist Sophia Narwitz posted up screen captures from his Twitter account and the Facebook post he made to his friends.

According to Games Nosh, Kane was accused of having sexual intercourse with his ex-partner while she was unable to give full consent due to being on medication.

In the Facebook post – which is not available to the general public if you visit Kane’s Facebook feed – he explains in detail how sorry he is for his conduct and how he has been asked to keep away from his ex-partner.

In the post he wrote…

“CW: Sexual Assault

“An update to last night’s post:

“Multiple people have reach out to tell me that they felt my previous statement was diminishing or evasive. That was not my intention. You should believe the other person’s versio nof events, and you should respect their privacy in this matter.

“I was staying with a long term partner with whom I’d had specific discussion on what levels of physical contact were and weren’t okay.

“I knew that partner had been prescribed a medication that affected their ability to consent.

“I didn’t know they had taken the medication that day but I had a responsibility to ask directly whether or not they had taken it, and I failed in that responsibility.

“I believed in the moment there was enthusiastic verbal consent to things we’d previously agreed to.

“I know now that consent was not valid. I realized the horrible error I’d made before things progressed past kissing and fondling, and stopped immediately.

“I’ve lived with that moment burned in my mind for the last two and a half years. I don’t go a day without thinking about how one question, or one small bit of mindfulness in the moment could have avoided causing someone I cared about such pain. Since then, because they asked me to, I have made a concerted effort to avoid them at public events. I have had conversations with many people in the games community about what happened. I am continuing to work hard to become a more mindful person.

“As In my previous statements:

“To the person involved, if you ever read this: I am sorry. That night and our break-up were both things I should have handled in a more emotionally open and mature way than I did. You deserve better. I will always be sorry. I have spent the last two and a half years trying to improve the lack of mindfulness and consideration that lead to my mistake. I will continue to do so. I will always be ready to talk, should you need to. If there is anything I can do to help you feel safe, please let me know. Otherwise, I will continue to give you the space you wanted and will continue not to make any attempt to contact you.

“To everyone else, I am committed to transparency (while respecting the privacy of the person involved) and continuing to grow. If you have further concerns about my conduct or anything else, I am available to talk privately.

“Thank you for taking this seriously, and please trust that I do too.”

Kane is a notoriously outspoken advocate for Social Justice Warrior policies. He’s staunchly anti-#GamerGate and was quick to throw gamers under the bus following the New Zealand shooting, despite being a developer.

Back on February 5th, 2019 Kane attempted to rewrite history, claiming that #GamerGate was a harassment campaign, even though there was never any evidence that #GamerGate was a harassment campaign by the FBI or in the WAM!, report. There is, however, lots of evidence that #GamerGate helped improve the thics policies of multiple websites, including but not limited to The Verge, Destructoid, Vox and Polygon to name a few. #GamerGate also worked with the FTC to improve the endorsement guidelines for video game review disclosures.

Keep in mind that Crash Override Network, Zoe Quinn’s organization that the book was based on, was involved in legitimate harassment and doxing, according to leaked chat logs.

In fact, media outlets refused to report on Crash Override Network’s harassment and doxing after they were sent the press packets.

Kane was also completely on-board with mocking gamers who were angry that VG 24/7 was going to boycott and blacklist GOG.com for tweeting out an image of Portal 2, calling gamers “piss babies” in a July 19th, 2018 tweet.

More recently, John Kane claimed that video games were being used to recruit Neo-Nazis, tweeting on March 19th, 2019.

This basically goes to show that many of the people who hate the gaming industry are oftentimes guilty of what they accuse gamers of.

John Kane joins an ever-growing list of offenders and perpetrators of sexual misconduct within the Social Justice community, many of whom were discovered to be pedophiles, abusers, and actual rapists.

I attempted to reach out to Kane to ask him why he chose to be a game designer while simultaneously denigrating the audience who buys games, as well as why he would accuse #GamerGate of something so heinous as being a harassment campaign while simultaneously taking sexual advantage of a medicated woman, but he has me blocked on Twitter.
