FURYU Corporation and Spike Chunsoft are planning on releasing the game Crystar in the West for the PlayStation 4 and on Steam for PC on August 27th, 2019. With all of the rampant censorship going around and various games either being ceorced into censorship or outright banned, many gamers wondered if Crystar would be hit. Well, it has been hit.
The censorship is relatively minor for now, and it’s related to the game’s opening cinematic, which was made available both for the PS4 and Steam versions of the game.
You can view the Western announcement trailer below, which covers both the PS4 and PC version of the game. This was uploaded to the Spike Chunsoft YouTube channel.
If you notice there’s a missing segment from the Japanese opening at around the 1:02 mark where a segment of the transformation sequence for the main character Rei has been removed..
If you missed it, the transformation sequence for Rei shows an x-ray of her body and her tail bone. Her skin comes back as her battle skirt develops and it shows her bare rump for a brief second, jiggling in all its exposed glory.
If you missed it, there’s a freeze-frame so you can see what was removed.
The shot is only on screen for fractions of a second but it was still completely removed from the Western announcement trailers for both the PS4 and the Steam version.
In fact, if you head to Steam and watch the trailer, it also removes the segment from the opening sequence.
Essentially, both PS4 and Steam users will be receiving a censored opening sequence.
What we don’t know is if the censorship mandate was passed down from Sony, passed down from Valve, or if Spike Chunsoft and FURYU Corporation decided to self-censor to avoid any kind of controversy.
We know that Sony has PS4 censorship policies in place that basically enforce developers to censor certain aspects of their game, just the same we know that Valve has inconsistent policies in place that ban or enforce censorship of certain games but we’re not always sure what the criteria is.
It’s now a matter of questioning if this censorship is being done to comply with those standards or out of fear of those standards. We know that Spike Chunsoft had to heavily censor Zanki Zero: Last Beginning for both PS4 and Steam, as well as Conception Plus on the PS4, so this isn’t anything new for Spike Chunsoft.
For now Crystar‘s opening sequence is definitely censored, but we’ll have to wait and find out if more of the game has been censored similar to Conception Plus or Zanki Zero.
