[Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Chaotic Thinker regarding the recent censorship and content suppression sweeping through the Japanese game development sector]
For a while we’ve been hearing, or rather reading, of multiple social media giants banning media for the sake of the children and that legal gray areas are a thing apparently and so platforms like Steam and PlayStation have banned and often harassed and bullied Japanese developers into censoring and often destroying their work and their clientele’s trust because of the rising intolerance of nudity on the Western Hemisphere of the planet.
Many of us saw the rise of this hell after Sony Japan fused In April 2016. SCE and Sony Network Entertainment International were restructured and reorganized into Sony Interactive Entertainment, carrying over the operations and primary objectives from both companies. The same year, SIE moved its headquarters from Tokyo to San Mateo, California.
For a quick background review, many of us gamers and people who aren’t afraid of fan service, myself included, heralded this a great move. The year 2016 was a year in which many of us who liked freedom of speech believed in active debate as a healthy thing. My automatic thought was that the barriers that kept Japanese games away from us westerners like language and localization would be a thing of the past. There are, after all, many great games from previous console generations many of us couldn’t play since they only released in Japan and not all of us speak and/or read Japanese.
Koei Tecmo released Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 but away from the West because they saw the nonsense and didn’t want to deal with SJW crap, but released it multilingual so we could import and bypass people who can only be described as a reincarnation of the puritans behind the Salem Witch Trials drunk on Marxist ideas and insanity.
Sony being a Japanese company, we naively believed that the intertwining of both regions would mean more multilingual works were on the way and the bypass of the SJWs was more than assured now that Sony Japan and Sony USA had joined forces. Right? Wrong.
Despite what we think of our nation’s Liberals, the U.S., constitution and freedoms we enjoy put it ahead of many other Western nations and the respected of said document has placed many of us like hawks keeping these new age puritans in check from becoming the U.K., in which you’re barred from owning a firearm and can not defend yourself if a intruder breaks into your home, you need a damn TV license to watch Television and to dare watch TV without a license is equal to hefty fines and jail, meaning the government has full control on what you can and cannot watch as, Pornography with blowjobs is banned and now later this year you’ll need to submit your ID to access porn sites via the AgeID check. As the United States in contrast produces and licenses loads of erotic content and is a major distributor as well. Japan is also well known for producing lots of erotic content, too.
Boy how wrong I was, and we were. In the past year we’ve seen a tidal wave of attacks on anything fictional or real with breasts, panties or Asian origin. Soon after we were backstabbed by Steam who had previously declared that it would not ban content or restrict fan service oriented content to do do a complete 180 and gave a rather pathetic excuse that they’re removing content with minor aged characters on appearance alone, and declared that said content exploits children and/or that steam doesn’t want to deal with gray areas which in all honestly do not exist.
Meanwhile Sony Japan President gave a neutered response as to why they have the censorship policies in place, and the explanation is nothing short of total castration after kissing the SJW ring and bowing down to them instead of their consumers. And it has completely disregarded and disrespected japanese developers, artists and fellow countrymen who depended on PlayStation platform to make a living with the following “About the censorship, we tried to meet global standards,” he is reported as saying. “Regarding the balance of the freedom of expression and safety for children, it’s a tough problem to deal with.”
Things have escalated for the worse, as now Twitter is following suit and Reddit too, meshing both Sony and Steam responses together highlighting “Supposed Gray Areas” in the U.S., for Japanese media that portrays fictional characters who bear no resemblance to a real life human, while being called both “children” and/or “minors” alike given the High School default theme featured in a lot of the Japanese pop culture medium.
In the United States, prior to the puritan cabinet of George W. Bush who sought to make a heroic name for themselves as well as to cover their failures as an administration just the same way the U.N., has Japanese Media under attack to “Protect Children”flag of nonsense regardless of their own hypocrisy and irrelevancy, the US introduced the Protect Act back in 2003 to ban sculptures, drawings, simulations or animations that they equated to actual child pornography, which Bush signed.
Prior to this, the U.S., law stated that content must be based on a portrait or use of a face of an actual child to be considered legally punishable by law and basically ruled any drawing or fictitious content as laughable in any court because people shouldn’t be punished for things that don’t exist. What novelty of an idea there, huh?
Anyway, said Protect Act was proverbially destroyed by a Federal Judge in 2008 as it was nonsense and unconstitutional via United States v. Williams (2008). It was ruled that “an offer to provide or request to receive virtual child pornography is not prohibited by the statute. A crime is committed only when the speaker believes or intends the listener to believe that the subject of the proposed transaction depicts real children. It is simply not true that this means ‘a protected category of expression [will] inevitably be suppressed…Simulated child pornography will be as available as ever.” Also of issue has been the wording of “18 U.S.C. § 1466A”, where parts of the law testing the criminalization of a “visual depiction of any kind” have been tried in the courts. In October 2008, a 38-year-old Iowa comic collector named Christopher Handley was prosecuted for possession of explicit lolicon manga. The judge ruled that two parts of the PROTECT Act criminalizing “a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting” were unconstitutional,
Since then, later cases has only been prosecuted to real minor depiction in media held by the accused and no case as resurfaced since 2008.
The United States is the biggest porn distributor and license holder in the world. The U.S., presently licenses eroge, hentai, ecchi media, written, drawn, animated or simulated.
With the current attack on Japanese media, we make one major mistake when debating said actions by these large companies: the biggest mistake by far, and the most lethal one, is the fact that any and all debates are to be held in a neutral space, aka REALITY.
It is important to acknowledge that the moment you make an AGE related argument for FICTIONAL material or excuse anything with a canonical age, It does not, has not and should not ever matter. You’ve automatically lost the debate and nothing you do after can make you win. When you make or accept an AGE related argument you’re no longer debating on the floor of reality but you’re debating inside someone else’s head.
Ask your self, during a debate about a certain topic, is it reality or fiction? If it’s fiction there is no place for argument. If you watch CSI and witness a murder, are you a witness? If you draw yourself a medical degree, are you now a Doctor?.
To win this war you cannot subject yourself to the personal whimsical reality of others. It is not acceptable on any measure or in any shape or form to make a fiction into reality. When you decide to make an AGE argument you endorse the yahoos of years prior that believe games cause mass shooting, and other nonsense spouted in the 1990’s (and even today).
You endorse, believe it or not, every nonsense argument ever spouted towards the morality of fiction since the beginning of time.
At the beginning of this article I named this “The Unofficial Japanese Media Embargo” and the reason, the real reason any of this here is happening is precisely as the name suggests. Japan is a land we all have come to admire, mostly for their creativity and their balls of steel when it comes to putting SJW’s in their place.
I had time to analyze this, and here are my two cents: this censoring serves two purposes. First, each one of us that share, retweet and/or comment about censorship news have to realize that it helps shape public opinion. If you notice a lot of this censoring has been found out rather than announced by the companies themselves, in hopes of creating a mass response, known as response baiting. This places the poster, or in this case the company, as virtuous and having to stand up against the people vying for censorship. Their aim is that since none of what they are banning is actually illegal, it creates a noticeable artificial culture so that when the censorship news makes the rounds, the people advocating for censorship can later use these examples to then lobby on the behalf of more censorship to make fiction officially illegal, sort of like what the U.N., is trying to do with their draft proposal.
The second purpose is to create an embargo on Japanese media under a virtue flagship. This is an attempt to subdue Japan. Japan puts SJWs in their place and SJWs have noticed the respect that Japan commands. What they’re doing is an effort to control Japan. They want to destroy it and they want them to grovel and kiss their dirty ring just like it happened when Popes were thought to be second only to God himself.
Defeating this is actually quite simple: Sony, Steam, Reddit and the other crazies are obviously the opponents of freedom of expression, we know this so we deny them exposure. Every action they take, it’s taken with the aim of spreading and being noticeable. Retweeting, sharing and/or commenting is akin to the “Orange Man Bad” meme meaning SJW’s already believe Donald Trump to be bad but they keep saying it to imprint it and keep it relevant. You’re telling what’s already public knowledge but all you’re doing is keeping their actions in circulation. This benefits the creation of the artificial culture they’re making.
Secondly, the next step was actually an Idea of Koei Tecmo whether they know it or not. Japan must realize they must stop relying on Western licenses and its publishing docks. Koei Tecmo’s multilingual approach is the way to defeat Steam and/or Sony. Japanese developers can bypass Steam’s docks and make them obsolete. I mean we pay for what we like and we have no issues buying directly from them. Japan must kick Steam and every other company causing or cooperating with the embargo outside Japan.
If Reddit, Steam and other sites insist on demonizing Japan, these very same companies have no business existing within Japan. Steam, along other companies, must be kicked out of Japan. we must find a way to rouse the Japanese and have them demand Sony Japan uncouple from Sony USA.
The third and final step is to drown out every action these companies take. Share the hell of anything SJWs are against: Fakku license, Fap Service reviews or compilations, anime airing dates and/or projects, or basically anything Japanese that these parasitic companies are trying to demonize.. Create our own culture and make the attempts of Reddit, Twitter, and the like irrelevant.
Remember, fiction isn’t Illegal in the United States, why should you adhere to the Marxist Puritan worldview and participate?
If you belong and/or are active in any forum or sub-reddit like the backstabbing r/Dead or Alive sub reddit that bans Honoka, Marie Rose and Nico lewd content, remove yourself from that sub-reddit and kill it with your absence. Don’t bargain with the insane.
Freedom of Speech and Expression is a Library. Remember this and burn it in your skull. You don’t allow an arsonist to burn an isle just because it isn’t your isle; fire spreads if you believe in the ideals of Free Speech, then all isles under its roof are automatically your isle and therefore your problem, otherwise there will not be a library left when the fire is done destroying. To the insane, the attack on Free Speech and Expression is a bargain sale, all manner of it must go!
