The upcoming 007 flick doesn’t sound like it’s going to be very 007 like at all. According to an article recently published on April 13th, 2019 over on Daily Mail, the production crew has decided to bring in Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a feminist writer and actress who worked on the BBC dramedy Killing Eve.
Daily Mail explained…
“One plot being considered involves Craig’s ageing Bond retired and now living in Jamaica – the island where 007 author Ian Fleming had his Goldeneye retreat. The 007 number has been taken up by a new agent – a woman – who embarks on a mission which forces Bond to come out of retirement.
“Despite Bond’s legendary reputation as a womaniser, the new 007 manages to resist his charms. “
We don’t exactly know how true this is, but if it does turn out to be the story they’re planning on telling, then this is basically a “Get Woke; Go Broke” situation for the 007: James Bond franchise.
No one who is a fan of the series is going to want to go see a film where a stuck-up, masculine woman usurps all of James Bond’s style and machismo (as well as his codename), while managing to “resist his charms”. That’s basically a retread of 007: Tomorrow Never Dies and 007: The World is Not Enough, where Bond’s female sidekicks were basically huge teases that led him on while “resisting” his charms.
According to the Daily Mail, they mentioned that the 33-year-old Waller-Bridge is somehow an in-demand scriptwriter in Hollywood, and someone told the Daily Mail…
“‘Her dialogue is sharp and brilliant. It’s young, it’s fun and it is all about female empowerment.
‘This will be a very modern Bond for the MeToo era.’”
To be completely honest, if this is true this sounds like complete and utter horse manure.
I can’t think of a worse way to end Craig’s tenure as the super-spy than kowtowing his masculinity at the perverse altar of feminism.
YouTuber Midnight’s Edge breaks down how feminism seeks to destroy the James Bond franchise, and what it could end up becoming in Waller-Bridge’s hands.
No amount of words can describe the sheer rage that any longtime Bond fan is feeling in the very depths of their soul right now. It’s like a mother having her baby ripped from her arms, or a soldier having his rifle snatched from his hands; it’s like a woodcutter seeing his favorite axe being broken in half and burned in front of his eyes.
The only upside is that the report from the Daily Mail might not be entirely accurate. According to The Observer, they had a slightly less polemic quote from the production, stating…
“While in [New York] she discussed with [Daniel] Craig how to improve the script of ‘Bond 25,’ which the 007 actor felt needed some “polishing”, by introducing more humour and the offbeat style of writing she is best known for.”
Hopefully the latter situation is the actual situation, and this final Bond flick for Craig isn’t going to be some feminist disasterpiece designed for the pound-me-too era.
We’ll find out how true this all is as more news surfaces from the production. According to the article, director Cary Fukunaga is set to direct the film starting in Jamaica in the coming weeks after acclaimed director Danny Boyle dropped out due to creative differences with the producers.
Some of the people in the comment section believe that the Daily Mail may have gotten the description wrong and embellished it with the whole feminist twist to drive stir up the outrage with hate-clicks. I can’t say for certain and there are no further details available just yet, but we’ll find out soon enough.
