Judgment For Steam, Epic Games Store Being Considered, Says Producer

Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Judge Eyes was released to critical acclaim in Japan, and it’s gearing up for release this summer in the West on the PS4 under the slightly altered title, Judgment. According to the game’s producer, Kazuki Hosokawa, the game could step outside the boundary of being a PS4 exclusive and appear on PC.

Niche Gamer translated the relevant section from the IGN Japan interview that they had with Hosokawa from the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, where he stated…

“I think the barriers have been lowered by putting [Yakuza] on Steam. Currently, other platforms for Judge Eyes have not been decided yet, but it is being considered as one of the options. We are evaluating the possibilities of not just Steam but also other platforms.”

The key to the quote here is that Hosokawa mentioned that they haven’t made any definitive decisions yet as far as platforms are concerned, but they are looking beyond porting the game to Steam if they do decide to port it to PC.

As many of you know, the only other notable platform on PC is the Epic Games Store. We know for a fact that Epic has been very aggressive is pursuing exclusivity deals for PC games to veer market share away from Steam. However, Epic has not shown much interest in Japanese made games. Could that change if Sega decides to look into porting Judgment to PC?

Right now Sega has been porting Yakuza games to Steam quite regularly. In fact, Gematsu reported on March 31st, 2019 that the ESRB had rated Yakuza Kiwami 2 ‘M’ for Mature on PC, even though Sega has not officially announced the title for release on PC. But since they ported the original Yakuza Kiwami to Steam on PC, it wouldn’t be surprising if Yakuza Kiwami 2 made the leap, as well. It also makes it even more likely that Judgment would be ported, too.

However, this is all working on the assumption that Hosokawa is speaking strictly about distribution platforms related only to PC. What if Hosokawa was also talking about other “platforms” in the form of home consoles? Is it possible that Sega could pursue a release of Judgment on the Xbox One? It’s highly unlikely but not impossible.

For now, Judgment is only gearing up for release on the PS4 in the West on June 25th.
