Star Ocean: First Departure R Remake is coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch 2019

Square Enix announced that a remake of the PSP Star Ocean game First Departure is inbound for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

The news came courtesy of a tweet that the new account made on May 25th, 2019. No details were made available for the game other than some title artwork for the upcoming JRPG. You can check it out below.

The original Star Ocean: First Departure came out for the PSP back in 2007. What’s crazy, though, is that the game was already a remake of the original Star Ocean for the SNES that came out back in 1996. The original game, however, never made its way westward and was one of the few SNES titles that really pushed the system beyond its limits, much like the original Tales of Phantasia.

So technically Star Ocean: First Departure R is a remake of a remake.

No other details about the game were revealed, but speculation is already running rampant about what this means for the game being on the PlayStation 4 due to Sony’s censorship policies.

The original game and the remake weren’t steeped in fan-service, so I’m curious if there will be changes made to the game, or if maybe Square specifically picked this one to remake because there wouldn’t be much to censor? Unlike the original SNES version the PSP remake came with anime sequences during the cinematics, so if anything was censored it would be there.

I doubt that Square is going to depart too much from the original First Departure given that the game will have to accommodate the Switch’s portable mode. However, I am curious if the game will still use sprites or if they will switch to 3D?

For now there’s nothing but speculation, hope, and fear to go on. We’ll find out what they have planned for the game moving closer to its release.
