Doctor Sleep Brings The Sequel To The Shining To Theaters This November

More than three decades after publishing The Shining, Stephen King returned to one of his most iconic tales with the 2013 follow-up, Doctor Sleep. Now, six years after that, moviegoers will finally be seeing that tale on the big screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures this week launched the first trailer for Doctor Sleep, due out Nov. 8 in theaters. The trailer does a good job of easing viewers in, beginning with the sudden and violent appearance of the now iconic phrase, “Redrum.”

Doctor Sleep finds Danny Torrance, the kid from The Shining, all grown up and living a pretty crummy life. He comes into contact with another youngster who has his special abilities, only to discover she’s being hunted by a caravan of psychic vampires who feed off of children with “the shine.”

There’s actually quite a lot to unpack in this trailer for Doctor Sleep, which is coming to us from director Mike Flanagan. He’s responsible for spooky flicks like Oculus and Hush, as well as another King adaptation, Gerald’s Game, and the hugely popular Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House.

In case you weren’t aware, King is extremely vocal about the fact that he did not like Stanley Kubrick’s take on The Shining, though many hold it to be one of the best horror films of all time. Long story short, he didn’t feel it told the same story his book told.

What’s interesting here is that the Doctor Sleep film will be a sequel to the movie instead of the book. Sure, that’s basically the same thing but, as you can see in the trailer, scenes from the original film have been painstakingly recreated for this new movie. Whether or not you side with King on The Shining, it makes sense that Warner Bros. would want to keep the continuity of the original film. You wouldn’t want to confuse members of the audience who only saw the film and didn’t bother with the book and – oh, look – a character that died in the movie is suddenly back because they survived in the book.
