E3 2019: Greedfall Story Trailer Reveals Struggles Between Settlers And Natives

Well folks, it’s that time of the year where the E3 trailers start popping up and rolling out regularly, and we can start surveying and monitoring what sort of content we can expect to see from the big and medium-tiered developers over the course of the next year or two. One such game is the highly anticipated GreedFall, a colonization action-sim from Focus Home Interactive and Spiders.

The new story trailer dives into the political tensions between the settlers and the natives, as well as the various factions between both groups, including the treasure hunters, the killers, the mercenaries, and the scavengers.

You can check out the near two minute long E3 trailer below.

So first thing is first: the comments are disabled on the trailer, which is never a good sign. The like/dislike ratio is also disabled.

However, we do finally get a glimpse into what the story is like.

As is usual with these kind of tales, the settlers are a mixed breed of good and bad people, with the queen’s son sent to basically make sure everything goes smoothly with colonizing the island. Obviously things don’t go as planned and some of the more hardline members target the monsters and the natives for their paganism. The monsters and natives obviously fight back and it looks like there’s a complete breakdown between both groups.

The one thing a lot of people were worried about was the game basically being preachy about how evil colonization is and discouraging gamers from siding with the settlers. Given that a lot of other developers these days have been stripping players of choice to preach Left-wing politics in games – something legendary game writer Chris Avellone wasn’t too fond of – there is apprehension among some gamers about GreedFall falling into this trap.

To be honest, it’s hard to tell which way GreedFall might go. If it’s a right proper RPG then players will have a choice in who they side with and how the game unfolds. Spiders seemed to hint at that in the trailer, so when it launches this September on PS4, Xbox One, and PC we’ll see if they stick to that.
