Hidetaka Miyazaki Says Elden Ring Will Have A Character Creator

We’ve reported that Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin’s Elden Ring will break away from the usual world design found across multiple FromSoftware titles like Dark Souls 1-3 via introducing gamers to an open world. We also briefly touched on the game’s character customization in the past, but Miyazaki recently offered more insight into Elden Ring’s protagonist.

We noted in a past piece that NPCs aren’t in villages or towns like in most open-world games. However, the ones (NPCs) in the game will serve as vendors of some sort and will be “more compelling than previous” FromSoftware works thanks to Martin’s “mythology.” We also touched on how villages in the game will be desolate with Miyazaki saying:

“Villages will be the dark dungeon-like ruins that you have come to expect from us. Creating a more open game is a big challenge for us. If we were to add towns on top of that, it would become a bit too much, so we decided to create an open-world-style game focused on what we are best at.”

What we did not elaborate on was Elden Ring’s character creator, though we did briefly mention it in a past piece, due to the lack of info surrounding said mechanic. But, being no stranger to the Souls games, sans Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, folks will be able to make their own character according to an IGN (archive.is) interview:

“There is no fixed main character in Elden Ring. We mostly leave it up to the player to decide the characteristics and personality of the character they create.”

With that wording, expect the usual FromSoftware character customization options and other appearance changing items in the forthcoming game.

Lastly, although NPCs will be portrayed with more detail, they aren’t the main characters in any form fashion or way, but individuals in the world that hold pieces to Martin’s overall mythology behind Elden Ring, where IGN goes on to say your character sits front and center as the protagonist.

Elden Ring is set to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One at an unknown date.
