Square Enix And Marvel’s Avengers Will Have Microtransactions

The Marvel’s Avengers game will not feature loot-boxes or any pay to win mechanics according to Square Enix at its E3 2019 presentation, which is now over. Contrary to that, though, Square Enix has recently admitted to the 2020 game slated to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One to have microtransactions in a recent interview.

The Marvel’s Avengers game looks like a sad parody of some sorts or knock-off cosplayers pretending to be the iconic characters from the comics mashed in with a cheap version of the MCU, but I digress.

The point behind this piece is that while the game was once billed to be a non-pay-to-win title without loot-boxes, publication site IGN (archive.is) had the chance to interview Crystal Dynamics and learned otherwise.

“During the Square Enix presentation for Marvel’s Avengers at E3 2019, it was said the game won’t have loot boxes or ways to pay to win, but you’ll notice they didn’t say there wouldn’t be microtransactions. IGN talked to the game developers about it and they confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers will indeed have microtransactions.”

Indeed, Marvel’s Avengers will have microtransaction in the form of “custom outfits” that you can purchase. Instead of the publisher and developers being upfront with gamers about the 2020 superhero game having in-game purchases, they instead played the lingo gymnastics game to save face and avoid backlash despite MTX being in the forthcoming title.

Crystal Dynamics lead creative director Shaun Escayg added that cosmetics are the only things that you can purchase noting, “There will be custom outfits that you can purchase in microtransactions.” Additionally,
Lead combat designer Vincent Napoli followed up on Escayg’s explanation with, “There are other aesthetic ways to customize your player card and your player experience, but there is nothing that affects the gameplay.”

The piece concludes with the website noting the two devs not wanting to go into detail on what is customizable. As an additive, seeing how some games allow players to change voice lines, emotes, colors to even outfits, don’t be shocked if the game has mechanics that quietly promote the act of buying something in the “cosmetic only store” to maximize profits.

The upcoming action-adventure game developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montréal and published by Square Enix is to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 15th, 2020.
