What started in 2003 with House of 1000 Corpses and advanced into a traveling carcass of violence with The Devil’s Rejects in 2005, will presumably conclude with 3 From Hell, the upcoming horror flick from the former rock-star turned pop-culture director.
I’ll be frank: the trailer isn’t great.
It’s not that it isn’t great because it’s boring or poorly paced or doesn’t make sense, it’s not great because it looks cheap… really cheap.
Back in the day a lot of direct-to-VHS movies were cheap but they didn’t let it show through the camerawork or cinematography. A lot of times, back in the day, the quality of the film was made obvious due to the cheap set designs, bad acting, and below par special effects. In this case, I can’t speak for the sets or special effects because we don’t see a lot of them on display. What we do see is a lot of guns being shot, lots of stabbing motions being made, and plenty of Sheri Moon Zombie making raucous noise throughout the trailer.
Unfortunately, the camerawork does look cheap, the acting isn’t particularly great from Sheri Moon, and it generally has that cheap film quality that a lot of DTV movies possess in this day and age.

The gist of the film seems interesting enough, as it takes place after the end of The Devil’s Rejects. The surviving members of the Firefly family are gunned down by police and hospitalized. There’s a bizarre cult movement championing for the killers’ release, and by some miracle it happens but the trailer wisely doesn’t give away how.
What we do know is that once the trio are freed they go on their killing spree once more. This time apparently crossing paths with masked Mexican cartel members.
One of the bounty hunters from the previous film, Rondo, played by Danny Trejo, also makes a return but it appears he’s been imprisoned after he and Billy Ray helped Sheriff Wydell torture the Firefly family. What role he plays in this third film is left up in the air, but I would imagine that if there’s any hint of revenge they would want to get it on the man who helped lock them away.
The major problem is that the trailer doesn’t really give us much in the way of understanding what’s going on. I suppose that’s probably what was intended, and there might even be some group out there who enjoys nonsensical trailers filled with violence and little substance, but I doubt this will go over well with larger audiences out there trying to get a grasp on the overall plot.
On the upside, at least the trailer does hint at the movie having gratuitous amounts of gore and nudity. In one scene it looks like Baby is chasing down a naked woman and bludgeons her to death. Given that Baby is wearing a loose-fitting police uniform, I wouldn’t doubt it if she stole it from the fleeing, buck naked woman. That’s very much not politically correct and I can definitely get behind that.
Either way, 3 From Hell is set to release soon. Although, the trailer is remiss in providing any sort of release date or whether it will hit theaters or end up as a direct-to-DVD release; but I suppose we’ll find out soon enough, eh?
