Director Nicolas Winding Refn has been revealed as a special guest in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming Death Stranding for the PS4. Refn’s role was revealed via a two minute trailer that outlined his character’s purpose, which is to find out more about the death stranding through… death.
Like all Kojima games there are some oddball characters in Death Stranding. Refn plays Heartman, a member of BRIDGES. In the two minute clip we see that Norman Reedus’ character goes to visit Heartman, who wakes up from death.
Heartman can only stay awake for 20 minutes at a time, so he briefly explains that he enjoys short films, books, and other forms of entertainment that he can consume within 20 minutes.
You can check out the trailer below.
This is definitely more Kojima flexing his pretentious desire to be a filmmaker.
We don’t get much of an explanation for Heartman or why he’s limited to waking and dying in intervals, but obviously that’s likely going to be explained in the actual game… maybe.
The game is a third-person action-adventure title with stealth elements that spans an open-world where you’ll be tasked with venturing across the world, carrying objects from one destination to the next. While the main focus is on travel, there will be some shooting mechanics, but we haven’t really seen what the combat is like other than a few melee sequences. In addition to featuring Norman Reedus the game also stars Madds Mikkelsen along with Léa Seydoux, Lindsay Wagner and Guillermo del Toro.
Expect a bunch of journalists to word-wank over Kojima’s upcoming game when the reviews hit for Death Stranding. Also if the men get undressed or nude like in the earlier trailers and the women stay clothed, expect the score to go even higher for the game. If Kojima attempts to throw in some fan-service that will appeal to straight men, expect editorials and whinging from all the usual suspects.
Anyway, you can look for the game to launch on the PlayStation 4 starting November 8th this fall.
