One of the most original sports fighting games to come along this generation is Team Reptile’s Lethal League Blaze. It’s a multiplayer, side-scrolling, sports ball game where you use a character’s special abilities to wallop your opponent with a speeding ball. You’ll need to use expert defenses and counters to avoid getting K.O’d by your foes while facing off against a colorful cast of characters in unique environments.
Team Reptile announced that Lethal League Blaze is now available for the Nintendo Switch, the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4 as a digital download from the respective digital distribution outlets. They also have plans on releasing a physical version of the game over in Japan after partnering with Japanese publisher Oizumi Amuzio, who will make physical copies available for the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch starting September 12th.
The game’s themes, visuals, gameplay, and characters are all inspired by Sega’s Jet Set Radio series, which shines through indubitably via the gameplay trailer. You can check out the trailer below.
It’s a quirky looking game that combines the aesthetics of Jet Set Radio with the concept of Windjammers but it takes place in side-scrolling battle arenas. It’s definitely not something you see everyday in the gaming sphere that’s for sure.
The originality of Lethal League Blaze was enough to court a dedicated fanbase when it launched last year in October for PC, garnering more than 100,000 unit sales.
It was then that Team Reptile undertook the mammoth task of porting the game to the Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, mentioning in the press release…
“Developing and releasing this game simultaneously on all three the consoles feels like a great achievement for us given the fact we are doing the porting in house with just two developers.”
Now that’s even more impressive, especially given that most developers resolve to outsource porting to dedicated port houses in order to get the job done right (even though sometimes even dedicated port houses can screw up pretty badly, like the PC ports of Mortal Kombat X or Batman: Arkham Knight).
