Yogscast CEO Mark “Turps” Turpin Resigns Following Sexual Misconduct Claims

Yogscast CEO Mark “Turps” Turpin issued a public apology and announced that he was stepping down as CEO on July 17th, 2019 due to sexual misconduct claims.

The announcement came just shortly after former Yogscast member Matthew “Caff” Meredith was ousted for sexual misconduct.

Turpin’s statements were published over on the Yogscast sub-reddit, where he wrote…

“[…] Just to let you know I’ve stepped down as CEO of the Yogscast. When I recently said we expected the highest levels of professionalism from our talent, I need to be held to those standards too.

“I have sent some inappropriate messages to several members of our community and I’m deeply embarrassed about this error of judgement. There’s no justification or excuse for my behaviour. I was in a position of considerable responsibility and you all deserved better from me. If you’ve been upset by my actions, I’m very sorry. […]”

This was followed up by another statement from founding member of Yogscast, Lewis Brindley, who also acknowledged that while Turpin is stepping down, they’ve also received complaints about Paul “Sijin” Sykes, who is another member of the Yogscast team.

In a follow-up comment on Turpin’s resignation thread, Brindley wrote…

“Turps is a close friend to many here. I can confirm he’s chosen to resign from the Yogscast. It’s very important to me that we’re held to high standards, and he made the right decision to face up to his actions. […]

“It’s been an eye opening week for me – we owe everything to our community so it’s important we deal with bad stuff like this responsibly. I’ve seen actual evidence that looks fake, and fake evidence that looks truthful – so we needed time to look into all of this.

“Following your emails – we’re looking into some historical claims against Sjin and I’ve asked him to step away from main channel streams in the meantime. As I’ve said before, we are trying to do the right thing and take these claims seriously and would rather everybody didn’t jump to conclusions. […]”

YouTuber TheQuartering covered all the fallout from this revelation, which isn’t too shocking for anyone who has been following the Social Justice scene.

Yogscast member Kim Richards also did a follow-up post apologizing to all of “Turps’ victims”, writing in a separate Reddit thread

“I know many of the people who came out about Turps were bullied on social media about it, and while I wasn’t directly taking part in that I was posting things like this.

“I’m absolutely gutted to hear this news. It feels like shit. Now that my word have officially been eaten, I’d like to extend an apology to all of Turps’ victims I doubted. I couldn’t have known that you guys were right all along back then, but now I can make this apology in hindsight.

“Stay strong, the community is with you!

“And while I’m making this post, I’d also like to commend Lewis on how much of a fucking trooper he is being through all this. I can’t imagine how stressful this is for him.”

What’s interesting is that the Yogscast had multiple run-ins with ethical violations, starting way back in 2014 when they were doing the Yogscast Discovery where they would get a share of the revenue from games they covered, but wouldn’t always disclose that, and then they were also getting a share of the revenue from games featured in their Humble Bundle collaboration.

These instances were covered by YouTuber EnterElysium way back in October of 2014.

TotalBiscuit then began to pepper the Yogs crew about disclosures, and this led to certain members of the crew, such as Simon Lane, taking potshots at TotalBiscuit whenever the late John “TotalBiscuit” Bane would criticize something within the Culture War that the Left were doing, such as when he lambasted Marvel for using the Thor comic to push Left-wing feminist rhetoric back in March of 2015.

By Christmas, 2015, they did manage to patch things over, and Simon and TotalBiscuit buried the hatchet via a livestream. However, there were still lingering issues about Yogscast and their lack of disclosure and the group’s ever-increasing amount of corruption, as highlighted in the Cynicalbrit thread from 2016.

Despite leaning Left and being censorious of anyone who made “sexist” or “bigoted” comments within their community, there’s some steep irony in that the CEO of Yogscast and its members have been called out for sexual misconduct. In this case, the CEO admittedly stepped down for said conduct, meaning that Mar “Turps” Turpin gets to join his former cohort on the SJW Sexual Misconduct master list.
