There’s a fishy story floating about involving Idaho ice skating coach, Jonathan Schmidt. The 40-year-old worked at the Idaho IceWorld youth skating park as a coach until he was arrested, following an investigating that allegedly involved him viewing “digitally animated images” of young children engaged in sexually explicit material.

Sankaku Complex picked up the news from the Idaho Statesman who reported that on August 21st, 2019 Schmidt was arrested for viewing child pornography January 29th, 2019 and August 21st, 2019.

The Idaho Statesman reported…

“Schmidt came under scrutiny by investigators because high-definition, digitally animated images of young children engaged in sexual activity with adults were being downloaded at an internet address associated with him, according to court documents. Police served a search warrant at his home on Franklin Road on Aug. 21.”

They don’t describe what the “high-definition” digitally animated images were, or whether it was from a public facing site or an onion on the dark web, but somehow it led to an investigation.

What’s more is that they don’t say what exactly tied the imagery to Schmidt that led to the investigation, or in what way the imagery was associated with him via the internet address, but one can only assume that someone he knew either ratted him out or he ended up on a police honey pot, or he was discussing his habits in a forum. Either way, it was his viewing of digital images that led investigators to acquire a warrant to search his house, where they reportedly found videos of pubescent boys engaged in sexual acts.

According to the affidavit, Schmidt had become addicted to child pornography, but couldn’t shake the bug, with the lead detective from the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force stating…

“I interviewed Schmidt, and he admitted to viewing child pornography for many years. Schmidt admitted he knew it was against the law to view child pornography and he has tried to quit many times but returns to it.”

The Idaho Statesman explains that Schmidt told the police that he decided to start viewing loli and shota material so as to avoid viewing real-life child pornography, as he believed that loli/shota content wasn’t against the law.

There have been studies done about the connection between pedophilia and lolicon/shotacon material. In two Danish reports they noted that typically those who stuck to viewing only lolicon/shotacon material did not act on physically contacting minors. Those who have already had physical contact with minors, however, usually had little or no interest in fictional material.

However, regardless of what the studies say, if investigators begin regularly using loli/shota content as a bridge to start arresting people, it may be a matter of time before such content becomes outlawed altogether.

In the case of Schmidt, his case is heading to the federal courts. If he’s convicted, he could face a fine of up to $250,000 or up to 20 years in prison.
