Open Discussion Sept 15th, 2019

Looks like I’m hosting this week’s open discussion for September 15th, 2019. It’s hard to believe but we’re already halfway through September and it seems like time is just breezing on by.

Okay, not to waste anymore time, the topic of the day is whether or not you can separate the art from the artist enough to enjoy the artwork, or if the artist’s politics can sometimes make it too overbearing to enjoy?

We’ve seen a lot of recent games, movies, and comic books being made in today’s era where the creator’s politics shines through more now than ever before, oftentimes hammering home a very specific message. A good example of this is the 2016 outing of Ghostbusters or just about any recent DC or Marvel comic book.

Taking the original question a step further… how much of the artist or creator’s politics are you willing to endure before you call it quits? Is a single message enough? Is two too many? What if the whole project is enticing or entertaining in some way but is riddled with subliminal and subversive messaging throughout?

Basically, how much is too much?

As usual, you can comment down below but if you run into any troubles with the comment section do let us know. Also, if you have a comment that gets caught in the Disqus or WordPress filter let us know and we’ll fish it out for you.

As for this week’s music selection, it’s none other than Kavinsky’s “Protovision” from 2012. It’s part of the Outrun album, featuring music inspired by 1980s car flicks and action films, like The Wraith and Joshua Tree. If you enjoy fast cars, night lights and cool synthwave, then you’ll love the song and the music video. Have something special on your mind? Feel free to share your music selection below.
