Uncut Gems Trailer Has Adam Sandler Placing Dangerous Bets With Violent Results

The Safdie Brothers and A24 released a new trailer for their indie flick Uncut Gems. This movie appears to be a modern day Carlito’s Way or an American version of Nicolas Winding Refn’s original Pusher, with Adam Sandler playing a gambler who makes an ambitious bet that comes with a string of consequences he’s not quite willing to pay.

The trailer is two and a half minutes long, which might be too long for some people, but amazingly it manages to avoid giving away any meaningful spoilers. We see how the day unfolds for Sandler’s character, whose cajonés are big enough to make a wild bet on a basketball game. The bet expands; his gumption grows; and then he loses the money.

The trailer shows ups and the downs that come with trying to make (and lose) fast money, and it’s set to a Hotline Miami-style soundtrack with a lot of cool color mixing.

The Safdie Brothers raise and lower the saturation depending on the mood they’re trying to convey, not unlike Guy Ritchie’s 2005 crime-drama, Revolver;  specific textures are lathered with a vibrant palette in the foreground, while  certain background colors are relaxed to create a subtle pop in each frame.

There’s an ebb and flow to the trailer, where we go on this roller coaster ride of emotion; we see Sandler on the incline, we follow him on the decline, and then see how each whipping bend and snapping turn brings something unexpected to the table.

I have to say, I’m genuinely interested in seeing Uncut Gems. It looks like the kind of crime thriller that stays true to its depiction of the characters and raw to the way events would unfold for the seedy criminals and greedy dastards involved.

Whether or not the movie is as good as the trailer is a completely different story, but we’ll find out once December rolls around and Uncut Gems gambles its way into theaters.
