Yahoo! Groups To Shut Down December 14th

[Update:] If you have a Yahoo! Group you would like to preserve, there’s a website over on Moms and Members Blog that discusses some alternatives for preserving your group.

[Original article:] Yahoo! Sent out word informing those who ran groups that the Yahoo! Groups community services will be shut down starting December 14th, 2019 at the end of the end.

According to First Post the news was rolled out via a FAQ post on the Yahoo! Support page, where they explained that starting October 28th no new posts would be allowed in the Yahoo! Groups on-site.

In the post it states…

“Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 28 you won’t be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You’ll have until that date to save anything you’ve uploaded.”

After October 28th no new content will be allowed to be uploaded to the Yahoo! Groups pages.

This was further confirmed by Colin Vassallo, the editor of Wrestling-Online Newswire, which relied on the Yahoo! Groups services to keep readers up to date. According to Vassallo…

“Yahoo! Groups is shutting down most of its features in December but so far, the e-mail functionality will remain untouched. How long that lasts remain to be seen. And no, we have no plan B.”

What this means is that if you used the Yahoo! Groups services as a way to communicate with your friends or build a community, you’ll have to look elsewhere to keep that community alive.

This shouldn’t be a shocker to anyone given that Yahoo!, has been on the decline for years. Former CEO Marissa Mayer had basically tanked the value of the brand over the years, and allowed Verison to come in and pick up what little pieces were left.

At this point Verizon seems to be gutting unnecessary services and trimming the fat from neglected or bloated features left unattended over the years.

If you have a group or a thriving community part of Yahoo! Groups, it’s best you notify them right now and start migrated elsewhere.
