Deep Down Team Is No More, But The IP Isn’t Done For According To Yoshinori Ono

I’m sure you know of Yoshinori Ono, no? He’s the executive producer over Street Fighter, and he’s also the guy that said during EGX 2019 that if you want Street Fighter IV and V ported to Switch, you need to shout to Nintendo. Well, in a new interview, Ono touches on the working title Deep Down and its development.

For those that did not see the PlayStation Meeting back in February of 2013 that acted as the reveal for the third-person hack-and-slash RPG, Deep Down  explored a futuristic, medieval-America overrun by dragons and demons. Accompanying all of this were knights scavenging through ruined skyscrapers for advanced tech.

Sounds fun to you? If so, the game in question has been out of the news for a long time up until now when eurogamer.net (archive.org) struck up a meeting with Ono.

The website asked the video game creator that there was a period where they thought Ono would be “Mr. Deep Down,” and what happened to that? Here’s his response:

“I haven’t been called Mr. Deep Down quite yet. The original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we’ve kept the trademark registered, and it’s not been completely given up on. Every year we examine titles we’re doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There’s not much I can say about it, but if you’ve noticed we’ve kept the trademark it means we haven’t given up on the title completely.”

In summary, the original team is no longer together at this point, since they are either working on another project or have left.

Nevertheless, Capcom keeps the trademark registered because they haven’t completely given up on the working title.

Furthermore, Eurogamer would try to pry more info from Ono by saying that they have played Deep Down at Tokyo Game Show a few years back, and it looked promising. Ono had this to say:

“We did have the concept developed a bit further than that, but yeah…”

Lastly, the PS4 exclusive title set in New York in the year 2094 that featured both single-player and multiplayer play with a protagonist boasting the ability to read memories from legacies of the past, sounds like it’s on hold until ideas start popping and the old team gets back together.
