Lawrence Sonntag Departs From Rooster Teeth, Inside Gaming

Lawrence Sonntag

Editor-in-chief of Inside Gaming, Lawrence Sonntag, has announced that he’s departing Rooster Teeth. This is likely a huge blow for them given that the popular YouTube channel was headed up by Sonntag, and despite having some missteps in the past, they did on occasion at least address some of the censorship issues carried out by Valve and Sony, which continue to plague the industry to this day.

Sonntag tweeted out his departure letter on December 17th, 2019.

He explains that the departure comes amid some complex issues that he doesn’t get into on Twitter, but states that he’ll be streaming The Witcher 3 and playing Cyberpunk 2077 when it releases, but also has some big plans that he’s going to roll out throughout 2020.

The relevant part of the note states…

“Now for the obvious questions that I can answer: why am I leaving, and what am I doing next?

“My reasons for leaving are complicated and probably beyond what a notepad screenshot could convey. The simplest version is that I discovered a number of opportunities that I could best pursue on my own.”

If you read between the lines you could attempt to fish out some subtext relating to his line about the reasons being “complicated” and attempt to tie it into the possibility of financial issues plaguing Rooster Teeth.

We reported before that following their firing of Vic Mignogna based on spurious allegations, they began bleeding staff throughout 2019, leading up to Rooster Teeth laying off 13% of their staff back in September of 2019.

Of course, we don’t have the details so anything beyond what Sonntag says public is mere speculation. Although I wouldn’t doubt we learn more about it in the coming months as he heads to Twitch.tv to stream.

He also followed up the tweets with a five minute video on YouTube.

If you were hoping that Sonntag was going to spill the beans in the video, he specifically says he’s not going to throw anyone under the bus and not talk about the behind-the-scenes complications that come with corporate production and the whole Rooster Teeth implosion unfolding over the past year.

As mentioned in the video, though, Sonntag’s departure comes shortly after Bruce Greene departed from Funhaus and Inside Gaming.

Back on September 4th, 2019 Greene streamed about his departure from Funhaus and the Rooster Teeth umbrella.

Greene basically spills the bean in his video, outlining that Twitch became his “bread and butter” and that he was tired of helping other mega-corporations become multi-million or multi-billion dollar brands.

In any case, with Sonntag and Greene out, I wonder how long Inside Gaming will be able to maintain its momentum?

The outlet does some hit and miss content at times, and if they start veering into supporting the pro-corporate monolith like they’ve done a couple of times in the past, it’s going to be a straight shot down the roadway to a village called Ruin. And for those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, LegacyKillaHD and Upper Echelon Gamers did videos about the incident.
