Fatal Frame was a survival horror game that offered a unique take on the genre. Rather than fighting monsters with a limited supply of ammo or outright running for your life you were given a camera that drained the energy from ghosts. Sadly for fans, the series went on hiatus before a brief return followed by another hiatus where it remains to this day.
In 2014, the same year as the last Fatal Frame title would release, Digital Happiness released a survival horror gem in the same vein called DreadOut, which would be followed by a 2016 standalone expansion and a VR game the next year. No one can argue DreadOut reached the production values of Fatal Frame, but it did successfully manage to capture a unique charm of its own creating a loyal following.
A following that rejoices as the sequel is slated to launch later this month on the 20th. Expanding the Fatal Frame inspired original’s direction to take some elements from Silent Hill while mixing in a bit of Deadly Premonition, players will explore a living sleepy small town to uncover the truth behind urban legends and haunted locations. No, it’s not “we need tourism dollars” either.
During your explorations, players will encounter a variety of NPCs both living and ghosts from which quests can be obtained. Like all sleepy towns nothing good ever happens there. You’re either bored to tears or surrounded by government/corporate conspiracies, murder cults/psychos, or paranormal manifestations. Unless you’re in Maine or the boonies in which case all of the above is just another Tuesday. DreadOut 2’s little town opts to go with a few psychopaths and an extremely haunted route. A classic “screw my life” scenario that we’ll be able to explore in-depth later this month.
