Epic Games Acquires Cubic Motion, Company Behind God Of War’s Facial Animation Tech

It looks like Tim Sweeney’s Epic Games has turned up in the news once again. This time, the company has managed to snag Cubic Motion, the company behind facial animations like in Sony and Santa Monica Studio’s soy edition of God of War and other well known triple-A games.

Nevertheless, this startup company based in the UK will see its employees helping Epic Games while continuing work with existing customers and partners. In other words, it’s business as usual but with Epic Games being over the company.

With that said, if you have no clue as to what is under Cubic Motion’s belt, the company is known for the following video that covers movement, facial expressions, and more:

Now that you have a clue as to what Cubic Motion is all about, this is Epic Games’ seventh acquisition when it comes to companies. In other words, 3Lateral, Agog Labs, Psyonix, Twinmotion, Houseparty, and Quixel are now joined by Cubic Motion. Many of these companies worked together for performance capture workflows to help with realistic facial animations for games like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

In addition to the above, Epic Games and Unreal Engine users will have access to Cubic Motion’s facial movement tech as explained below:

“Today we are thrilled to welcome Cubic Motion to the Epic Games family. Cubic Motion is a longtime Epic partner and a leading provider of automated performance-driven facial animation technology and services for video games, film, broadcast, and immersive experiences. By joining forces, our teams are solidifying our commitment to advancing the state of the art in the creation of believable digital humans for all Unreal Engine users.”

Sadly, the amount of money or shekels that Epic Games threw at Cubic Motion is unspecified at this moment. This means, like any other Epic Games Store timed-exclusive, the acquisition price remains undisclosed.

Finally, we’ll likely hear more about Epic Games and Cubic Motion later this year and especially in 2021.
