OtherSide Entertainment Announces Tencent’s Expertise Will Help System Shock 3

Back on May 18th, 2020, we covered a report suggesting that System Shock 3 and the devs might have found solace in Tencent. As of today, the two-day-old report has come to fruition in that the Chinese mega-corporation best known as Tencent is now helping with System Shock 3.

Website videogameschronicle.com has a pretty solid track record when it comes to reporting on rumors and things to come. With that said, the site a couple of days ago reported that “System Shock 3 is being backed by Tencent.”

And as of today, we learn from otherside-e.com the following information:

“We are happy to announce that Tencent will be taking the System Shock franchise forward. As a smaller Indie studio, it had been challenging for us to carry the project on our own. We believe Tencent’s deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights.”

After the above announcement, Twitter leaker Nibel tweeted that Tencent acquired both the System Shock franchise and IP, which is said by Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick to be “misinformation.” Here’s Nibel apologizing for churning out “false” information:

With all of that said, Asia’s second-biggest company by market value, Tencent, has over 800 studios relying on it. Here’s the current list of known companies that Tencent has a stake in as of 2020:

  • Riot Games – 100%
  • Sharkmob – 100%
  • Supercell – 84.3%
  • Grinding Gear Games – 80%
  • Epic Games – 40%
  • Fatshark – 36%
  • Stunlock Studios – 31%
  • Funcom – 29%
  • Kakao – 13.5%
  • Bluehole – 11.5%
  • Sumo Group and Sumo Digital – 10%
  • Frontier Developments – 9%
  • Ubisoft – 5%
  • Activision Blizzard – 5%
  • Paradox Interactive – 5%
  • Yager – ?%

As seen above, Tencent has a hand in a lot of well-known companies. Nevertheless, other popular services such as Reddit and Discord have received funding from Tencent too:

  • Reddit – received $150 million investment from Tencent early in 2019 (2020 payment unknown)
  • Discord – received $158 million in funding in 2018 from Tencent (2019 and 2020 payments unknown)

Last but not least, System Shock 3 is still in development for PC.
