Tokyo Game Show 2020 Will Arrive As A Digital Show Due To Coronavirus Concerns

Tokyo Game Show 2020 was first set to kick-off on September 24th at the Makuhari Messe center. However, due to the coronavirus, the convention’s physical portion has been canceled and will now take place online as a digital event.

Not too long ago, organizers such as the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), Nikkei, and Dentsu announced the cancelation of the physical portion of this year’s Tokyo Game Show.

None of the above should come in as a surprise given the current measures issued out in Japan due to the ongoing pandemic. With that said, you can read the official press release from expo.nikkeibp.co.jp:

Press Release May 8, 2020 TOKYO GAME SHOW 2020 Cancelled A Physical Event Format to Prevent COVID-19 Spread but Planned to Be Held Online

Tokyo Game Show 2020, scheduled to be held from September 24 to 27, 2020, is now planned to take place online. TGS 2020, which is usually held at Makuhari Messe, is cancelled. TGS 2020 is organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA, Chairman: Hideki Hayakawa) and co-organized by Nikkei Business Publications, Inc. (President & CEO: Naoto Yoshida) and Dentsu Inc. (Representative Director: Hiroshi Igarashi).

Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.

More information will be announced as needed on the official website and press releases from late May.

On February 21st, 2020, CESA issued out a letter saying that there will be a focus on “novel game consoles for the next generation,” as well as “the launch of cloud gaming.”

In addition to the above, the organizers also note that this year’s show will touch on “the start of 5G services for commercial use” and the “benefits” of 5G.

As of now, no major company has revealed plans for the upcoming digital games event, and that should be expected since we are several months out before it goes live.

In the meantime, Tokyo Game Show 2020 is set to kick-off sometime later this year. More information on this event can be found by hitting up expo.nikkeibp.co.jp.
