Marvel’s Avengers And The Dev Team Embrace Diversity, Says Shaun Escayg

Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos Montreal are all for diversity and hope that it shines through the upcoming game dubbed Marvel’s Avengers. According to the game’s Creative Director and writer Shaun Escayg, the poster child behind this diversity agenda in Marvel’s Avengers is unsurprisingly Kamala Khan.

Although the fugly stretchy girl has competition in the diversity department, which comes in the form of Black Widow rocking a jawline that would make one question the Russian born assassin’s gender, the devs believe that Kamala Khan is a better candidate for said agenda.

Despite the devs outlining this a while back on October 22nd, 2019, by stating that Kamala Khan is a relateable “fangirl” like the team and is free from “80 years of history,” the developers made sure to hammer home the same thing in a new interview conducted on August 7th, 2020.

Escayg chatted with publication site thesixthaxis.com to express how the whole team is “for diversity in general,” which the expanded take on diversity and [current year] content in Marvel’s Avengers lies below:

“We’re all for diversity in general. I love Kamala Khan, what she represents, what she brings to the table, how she reunited the Avengers and how she’s a fan just like us and idolises these heroes.

One of the things that is important to know about the way we approach the stories, and this is what Marvel is very good at in terms of opening up that 80 year history the the game, is that as long as we can ground those heroes and place them within our universe, within our world and story, every hero is on the table.

So the opportunity to see much more diversity of heroes, of storylines, everything is what we’re trying to set up in this sort of living organism that is the AIM dominated world that sort of happens after the campaign. That’s the foundation where we can now create these new stories and hero arcs, and yes, the goal is to open up the entire Marvel universe and use that as a palette to draw from to place and situate in our world.”

Moreover, on a journey to stop an evil company named AIM, gamers can pick from Captian America, Iron Man, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, and Kamala Khan. So far, other characters such as Hawkeye and Spiderman (PS4) will join the fray, which Ant-Man seems to be yet another playable character that will likely fill the ranks at a later time.

If this game seems interesting to you for some reason, know that Marvel’s Avengers will release on September 4th, 2020, across PC via Steam, PS4, and Xbox One. Also, the game will boast PS5 and Xbox Series X support this holiday season.
