Materia Collective recently announced that the new album Octorock: The Zelda Metal EP is currently available for purchase right now from various online digital storefronts, featuring an eclectic selection of popular songs from The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time, remixed as heavy metal rock songs thanks to the chord wizardry and steel-string mastery of Joel Kent.
In the press release, Kent explained how he joined up with the Materia Collective for this album collection of popular Legend of Zelda songs turned rock anthems, saying…
“I’ve been a huge Zelda nerd for as long as I’ve been able to hold a controller,” […] “And I still remember my first experience with the series: watching the full moon rise over Hyrule Field during the opening cinematic of Ocarina of Time. When I start up the game and hear those opening chords it still gives me chills and probably always will. Journeying through the various titles in the series to Koji Kondo’s melodies had as much an impression on me growing up as listening to my Dad’s classic rock albums.”
It’s hard not to get some hardcore feels while watching the opening to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It’s still one of the best openings in the history of gaming.
The album, however, only contains four songs. One song from each game. If you would like to listen to the tracks before making any life-altering decisions (like deciding to purchase the album) you can check out the Bandcamp embed below.
Kent did the arrangements for each of the songs while also leading on the guitar.
If you’ve always enjoyed the hardcore shredding of electric guitars from some of the classic heavy metal songs from the 1980s, Kent rekindles a lot of those sounds in the album. There are also some rock-worthy guitar solos that will be sure to crack a smile across your face.
