Pinchcliffe Grand Prix Racing Game Heads To Nintendo Switch, PC In 2021

Zordix Publishing announced that they signed a deal with Norwegian developer Ravn Studio to publish their spiritual successor to one of Norway’s most popular movies, Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. The new racing game will make its way to thte Nintendo Switch and on PC at some point in 2021.

Sadly no trailer accompanied the news, but the game is a spiritual successor to the Nintendo DS title that came out back in 2010, known as Flaklypa Grand Prix. The original game was a hybrid top-down racer and strategy game where you had to manage Reodor Felgen’s custom built car known as the Il Tempo Gigante to challenge the men who stole his design to create one of the fastest racing vehicles on the planet.

Based on the promotional poster that Zordix released for the game, Pinchcliffe Grand Prix for the Switch and PC seems like it may be a faithful recreation of the original 1975 stop-motion Norwegian film from director Ivo Caprino. You can check out the poster below.

The original film was basically like Norway’s version of Speed Racer.

But the final race that clocks in at nearly 20 minutes is one for the ages, and is meticulously designed and immaculately shot, especially to be as old as it is and using toys and puppets.

If you’ve enjoyed films like the original Gone In 60 Seconds, the live-action version of Initial D, the film Born To Race, or the classic Silver Dream Racer, then you’ll likely enjoy the craftsmanship and dedication to the racing sequences in Pinchcliffe Grand Prix.

If you’ve never heard of or seen the movie before, you can check out the awesome final racing sequence below, courtesy of moralsup.

I have no idea what Ravn Studios will do with the game, but since they’re based in Norway I’m hoping (expecting) them to avoid pozzing up a classic cinematic heirloom like Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. Most people are going to expect some sort of similitude with the original, and let’s hope they keep it that way.

According to Zordix, this will be their most expensive project yet. They’re investing a hefty sum of $1.5 million into the production, so this doesn’t sound like it’s going to be another top-down title like the Nintendo DS version.

The full game is expected to contain interactive storytelling elements, along with various mini-games, and of course, plenty of racing.
